Tea Room the Twentieth: The Greek Island

asmallbunchofflowers · 04/12/2010 21:47

Welcome to the twentieth (yes, really) Tea Room.

We find ourselves on a sun-kissed Greek island, where our whitewashed, blue-shuttered house nestles in the dappled shade of a gnarled old pine tree. In the olive grove, Mellors the gardener/handyman/factotum is tending the tea room menagerie of horses, camels, bison and guinea-pigs, recently joined by some recalcitrant old donkeys. The distressed chintz sofa, aga and cardboard cut-out of George Clooney have survived the relocation from the south of France and the aspidistra has pride of place on the mantelpiece.

Come in, put your feet up and join in the conversation. It may not make sense, but that's not important. What matters is the lovely people here and the chance simply to relax.

Sorry, a banana is actually a type of nut. Honest. I learned it in university Biology.

I'd like to go to bed now, if that's ok, instead of going home to paperwork and an overexcited toddler. Wine might help.

Can I join you ladies? I only have one 5 year old as due to our previously poor financial decisions, we have too much debt to repay to be able to afford childcare for afterschool for DS and nursery for a baby. Has anyone else had to make the decision for that type of reason?

amberlight · 29/12/2010 08:17

Hello Chivers1977! You're very welcome - have a seat and a cuppa. I'm Amber, and have a son who's now 18. Our decision to stop at one was kind of made for us due to medical reasons.

chivers1977 · 29/12/2010 08:21

Hi Amberlight. I have just noticed the other thread with the reasons that everyone has! I think that I may have "spoken" with you on the SEN thread too.

amberlight · 29/12/2010 08:24
Xmas Smile Could have done. (I'm so bad with names thanks to silly brain design - Xmas Blush )
chivers1977 · 29/12/2010 08:29

Grin I seem to be quite good at names on forums but rubbish face to face which really is embarrassing!

amberlight · 29/12/2010 08:44

Xmas Grin Yup. Took me all 3 episodes of Upstairs Downstairs to recognise the woman playing the lady of the house!
How was Christmas so far?

chivers1977 · 29/12/2010 08:51

Well I have been off sick for the past 6 weeks with back pain so has been quite a challenge to keep DS entertained througn snow and CHristmas holidays from the settee! We are having a games day today with wii, PS3 and Trivial Pursuit but DS can't understand why Daddy is still in bed and doesn't want to start playing games yet!!

Missed DHs birthday celebrations on the 27th due to back. 3rd year (at least) that I have not been well enough! It gives him something to tease me about for the next 12 months Smile

Definitely not doing anything for NYE. I hate parties TBH.

How was your Christmas?

amberlight · 29/12/2010 09:08

Back pain for 6 weeks? Xmas Confused Heck! Not what you need for the festive season.
Our Christmas was lovely thanks! Much joy with friends and family so far.

HallelujahHeisBorntoMary · 29/12/2010 10:20

eek re: back pain chivers! I am struggling to get around after only 3 days of knee problems!

Would anyone like a bacon roll? It appeals...

asmallbunchofmistletoe · 29/12/2010 10:41

Hello Chivers. Commiserations about the bad back. That does sound grim. I'm another by force of circumstances girl. When we managed (against all the odds) to produce one baby, we felt so fortunate that we didn't pursue trying to have another. Now, when I see friends adjudicating in fistfights between siblings, I feel quite glad of that!

A bacon roll certainly does appeal, Mary. Is your knee getting any better?

chivers1977 · 29/12/2010 13:01

Just had egg sandwich following my physio this morning - does that count? I have a spare sausage on the grill too!

thumbplumpuddingwitch · 29/12/2010 13:02

Welcome Chivers! Sorry to hear you have ongoing back pain - what have you done to it? Maybe JM or I can offer some internet assistance? (she = chiropractor, me = deep tissue massage therapist)

I have one DS (aged 3) - and have been trying unsuccessfully for 2y now to have another. Will have to give up soon due to advancing age but will keep trying for another year, I think. Might have to go and see the doc in January to discuss "options".

Mary - hope your knee is fully supported with elastic bandaging or something! Sounds horrible, what happened - hope it gets sorted out soon.

CMOTdibbler · 29/12/2010 13:46

Hello Chivers

Much, much warmer here. Spent the morning tidying ponies field and scraping mud off the bits not covered by his rug. Then scraping mud off ds

UnSerpentQuiCourt · 29/12/2010 15:22

Hello Chivers. We have one daughter aged 4, due to unexplained medical reasons and then traumatic and potentially harmful birth. I have spent much of Christmas in bed with flu being decorated with tinsel, but it has still been the best for a long time.

Hope everyone with problem backs, knees, etc, makes a sharp recovery.

CMOT, don't wish to spoil your fun, but have seen the weather forecast. Much much warmer is not going to last. Although it will also no be very very cold (I hope.)

JM - a nut??????????????????? I'm sorry, I know that you are unwell, but I can't accept a banana as a nut. Although I only have A- level biology, DH is a Horticulture Lecturer. (He never argues with anyone over matters horticultural, though.)

Thumb, I remember discussing options. None are as awful as they sound, especially if you are of a medical sort of make-up. People used to sympathise about the 'invasion of your privacy' or 'embarrassment' and I used to think why? Why any more so than if you ears weren't working properly, or your eyes?

JackSawMamaKissingSantaClaus · 29/12/2010 16:21

LOL Serpent, I just sprayed my coffee over the iPhone reading "I can't accept a banana as a nut" :o
I'm pretty sure that what I learned, will go investigate and report back, but I could of course be wrong :)

JackSawMamaKissingSantaClaus · 29/12/2010 16:55

Oh, I found the reason a banana is a nut.

A banana is a nut, and the proof is, that in a nut house, everyone is bananas.

Ba-da-BUM :o

amberlight · 29/12/2010 17:22
Xmas Grin
ScoutingForSanta · 29/12/2010 19:18

LOL JM!

HallelujahHeisBorntoMary · 29/12/2010 20:16

JM, YOU are a nut, LOL :o

JackSawMamaKissingSantaClaus · 29/12/2010 20:32

Well... yeah! Didn't you all know? Xmas Grin You've been putting up with me for two years now, surely that was obvious!

(OTOH... it takes one to know one!)

HallelujahHeisBorntoMary · 29/12/2010 20:51

Of course! :o

ScoutingForSanta · 29/12/2010 20:54

Just saw that someone from home has died. Sad Old Girl Scout friend. May she rest in peace.

ScoutingForSanta · 29/12/2010 20:55

Hi Chivers!

Evening all!

Chocolates anyone?
