Baby has severe gastroenteritis 3 days after starting nursery. Vomitting for 3 days followed by diarrhea and fever for 3.
Having to force fluids down via a syringe
Has only been at nursery for 3 days.
Is this normal? Does this suggest poor hygiene in the nursery?

No, it just sounds like bad luck to happen so quickly. It’s winter, it’s vomiting bug season, they spread easily through schools and nurseries. And children often get more ill when they first start at nursery.

No. You don’t know for certain it was picked up at nursery, though it’s likely. It’s the season for such bugs, and children are often sick when they start nursery. I would not make any judgements about nursery based on this alone.

Edit: having said the above, he does sound particularly ill. That bit isn’t just normal/to be dismissed, but it’s also not the fault of the nursery.

Not necessarily. Some of those GI bugs are so exceptionally contagious (norovirus especially) that it slips though even the most thorough cleaning. If another child was ill as yours started that could easily happen. In addition, your little one probably hasnt been exposed to much yet, and from that point of view it is very common to get ill when beginning nursery, although could equally be a cough/cold etc instead. Were there any particular things you saw that made you think hygiene issues?

Just bad luck unfortunately!
spreads like wildfire in those settings .

hopefully you won't get hit to badly after this.

Mine caught hand foot and mouth on the 3rd day of nursery. It’s just unlucky this time of year. Nursery and I had even said we would have a particularly bad case of “freshers flu” because he’d never even had a cold before starting (which is a miracle because his sister was in Reception he was born).

DC get it about twice a year, and no matter how meticulous I am about washing hands, wiping everything down, etc, it does still spread to each of us at home.

It can just be very contagious and you’re simply unlucky to be exposed to it so quickly, so I wouldn’t write off the nursery just yet.

Mine had a sickness bug virtually every week, she was out of nursery more than she was in it!

Thanks all
I havent seen anything concerning at the nursery - i was just so surprised he could catch it so quickly and it hasn't passed on to anyone at home
