Strapped child in nursery

ksuu · 22/03/2023 16:20

My daughter was attending a new nursery for a few weeks because we moved and after few day I saw pictures that my daughter 3yo was strapped to chair, low chair, when I was asking manager about it she didn’t reply. Yesterday I saw one more picture on App where my child was again strapped to chair but that picture was deleted. Today I asked about that again she said my daughter was strapped just for 2 minutes because she was spinning around. I didn’t give any permissions to do strap my child what can I do now?

It absolutely not okay to strap a 3 year old into any kind of a chair (except for transport ). Even if there was a danger or risk to life then they should have discussed with you as soon as it happened. Complain, report, take it to the highest level because they will be doing it to other children as well. Babies use highchairs, not toddlers (except in specific circumstances discussed with the parent or carer).

Caspianberg · 22/03/2023 19:39

My almost 3 year old is only strapped into his car seat daily.

At nursery the children just hold hands I pairs and walk Into to the woods etc, they don’t have prams at all ( they don’t take under 18 months). And the children all sit on benches or chairs to eat and do activities, they don’t own highchairs or low chairs with harnesses.

People seem to be missing that there was no safety need for her to be strapped in - ie it’s not a highchair. It wasn’t because she wanted them done up, it was to hold her still. I don’t think that’s ok.

Were you there?

Twizbe · 22/03/2023 19:42

Have you asked your daughter?

Honestly mine spent hours strapping herself in and out of that chair. Happy as Larry.

GoodChat · 22/03/2023 19:43

@nurseynursery she didn't need to be there. She can read.

The OP said it wasn’t a high chair, so there’s no safety need?

Car seats yes, but generally not anything else at 3.

You’re seriously saying that a 3 year won’t be strapped into a pushchair? Be for real

WeCome1 · 22/03/2023 19:47

Soontobe60 · 22/03/2023 17:37

How do you know?

Because it’s not a highchair. The OP said it was a low chair.

Mine hasn't been in a pushchair since she was 2.

I come to mumsnet and everytime I am here I feel like I'm transported to another world in which I do not belong.

I genuinely cannot understand this. Can you please explain what you mean? I strap my three year old in her chair when she's at the table. I would always strap a child in if the option was there. Straps are for safety no?!!!

BluetheBear · 22/03/2023 19:56

Yeah I don't get the outrage

isnt it just like strapping her in a hight chair??

Would you strap your child into a high chair for no other reason than they were spinning round?

I've read all the op posts and she doesn't mention her child spinning around

Yes if I was worried about them hurting themselves

@ÉireannachÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉ she says it in the OP

She does in the first post

GoodChat · 22/03/2023 20:00

@BluetheBear would you not just tell them to stop?

I am sorry, I didn't mean to be critical of different parenting choices. You feel it is necessary for safety and if that is done in a caring way then that is fine. But I think it is very different when a nusery is doing this without any discussion with parents. My children stopped using a highchair at about 1.5 years old. They moved to a little chair and then a dining table chair at 2. The nusery took the same approach. I think most nuseries encourage as much independence (in a safe and supportive environment) as possible.

Caspianberg · 22/03/2023 20:02

We have the stokke Tripp trapp highchair. It’s been used as ‘toddler chair’ without bar from about 20 months.

On stokke website the baby set with bar and the harness both say suitable for 6-36 months. Ie max 36 months. So no I wouldn’t expect 3+ year olds to be harnessed into a highchair.

My three year old is not strapped in. The only reason I could imagine strapping her in would be to restrain her in place so she couldn't get out and run off. She doesn't need to be strapped in to prevent her from falling out or because she needs it to maintain posture.

jannier · 22/03/2023 20:04

Nimbostratus100 · 22/03/2023 16:56

please explain what your concern is, this is just a dining chair, with the standard straps that will be used if there is any concern about a child falling out

3 year olds do not need high or low chairs. They don't need strapping in when eating and they definitely don't need to effectively be tied up for spinning or any other behaviour.

This exactly.

Why on earth would a child with no SEND need to be in a high chair or a low chair with straps?

Was it at a meal time?
Still not ok.

If she's spinning around and they've been struggling with behaviour...?
Guess what, it's still not ok.

They know this and that's why they deleted the picture.

There are so many ways they can handle a child doing something that isn't appropriate at the time.
This is NOT one of them.

jannier · 22/03/2023 20:09

If this works is a Chicco Pocket snake it must only be used strapped to an adult chair as child can stand and walk around with it strapped to them. It's max weight is 15kg.

Thanks for explaining to me. I missed a crucial part of the op so now I can understand why some people are saying it is unacceptable.
