Strapped child in nursery

ksuu · 22/03/2023 16:20

My daughter was attending a new nursery for a few weeks because we moved and after few day I saw pictures that my daughter 3yo was strapped to chair, low chair, when I was asking manager about it she didn’t reply. Yesterday I saw one more picture on App where my child was again strapped to chair but that picture was deleted. Today I asked about that again she said my daughter was strapped just for 2 minutes because she was spinning around. I didn’t give any permissions to do strap my child what can I do now?

Where does the OP say that her child was restrained as a punishment. It sounds to me like she was strapped in for safety reasons.

Bbq1 · 22/03/2023 18:06

It's a grey area. I work.in SEN Ed and we don't strap children into chairs as it's a form of restraint if you are doing it to prevent them from moving freely. So if nursery was strapping your dc in to limit her movement, it's restraint. If she was doing am activity a s strapped in for safety, it's not.

@GoodChat how do you know that?
Where has OP confirmed that?

Today I asked about that again she said my daughter was strapped just for 2 minutes because she was spinning around.

People aren't "missing" that, because you just made it up. The OP has provided hardly any useful information.

She said it was a low chair and gave a photo.

But was she spinning around at meal time?

alyceflowers · 22/03/2023 18:13

There's possibly a difference between being strapped in at a table during a meal time and being strapped in to restrict movement.
But a child of 3 shouldn't normally be strapped in to a chair at any time?

Mins32 · 22/03/2023 18:15

Using straps for a mobile child who has no postural needs is restraint and it’s a safeguarding issue. Fair enough if it’s a baby or toddler who doesn’t have good sitting balance or a child with an assessed need for specialist seating (by a health care professional in agreement with parents) but otherwise this needs reporting. I’m a HCP who assess for specialist equipment in nurseries and straps are only used with a clear need and a risk assessment.

GoodChat · 22/03/2023 18:21

@MichelleScarn no, if the OP has seen pictures and she wasn't sitting at the dinner table in them.

Ah but we can't let common sense get in the way of a good OP bashing, it seems.

Aren’t nursery aged literally strapped into chairs multiple times a day every day?

Strapped into carseats, strapped into highchairs, strapped onto changing mats, strapped into pushchairs, strapped into carriers?

I’d expect children at nursery/childminder to be regularly strapped in, in all of the above, obviously changes here and there due to ages, needs, equipment provided etc.

All of those things you're mentioned are for safety, and no three year olds aren't strapped into most of them.

EachTownLooksTheSameToMe · 22/03/2023 18:32

The word ‘strap’ has lost all meaning to my ears.

Car seats yes, but generally not anything else at 3.

InTheFutilityRoomEatingBiscuits · 22/03/2023 18:41

My DC was definitely strapped into pushchairs, carriers, and/or reins at 3 in nursery or at childminder and I see the nurseries and childminders out and about regularly with various staff members, double pushchairs, carriers and/or walking children holding hands, on reins or holding the sides. I’d imagine some of them will be 3.

Are they unusual?

onlythesparrow · 22/03/2023 18:42

I work in a nursery, we only use straps if it's needed to keep a child safe. So babies/ young toddlers, until they can sit safely on the little chairs. Plus a couple of older children with physical disabilities who could potential fall from a chair.

Never as a punishment!

Prescottdanni123 · 22/03/2023 18:55

It sounds like they strapped her into the chair as punishment. Which is wrong. And the fact that they have acted cagey about it since reinforces that. If it it was as innocent as "She was sat in the chair to do an activity and we were worried about her falling" then why not just say that? Although most 3 year olds can sit in a chair without the aid of a harness/straps.

I would pull her out and take it further.

notthisagainforest · 22/03/2023 19:10

Strapped to a chair ? Calm down for gods sake it's a chair with strap.

notthisagainforest · 22/03/2023 19:11

ShimmeringShirts · 22/03/2023 17:31

I’d pull her out of the nursery. Any nursery that’s using physical restraints on a child should not be allowed to operate.

Child is 3yo, pictured are where she is sitting on it strapped and hold some toy in her hands

OP posts:
MuffinToSeeHere · 22/03/2023 19:18

Why so vague? What toy, was she sitting at a table, is she being strapped in for punishment or because she strapped herself in?

Maybe if you answer some of the questions the thread will be of some use?

BlackBarbies · 22/03/2023 19:22

I’m so confused. Why are people saying to report the nursery when the OP’s child was just sitting in a high chair style chair with the safety straps on? Is this not allowed or something?

My nearly two year old starts nursery in two weeks so this is interesting😂 I feel like the problem is going straight over my head

Bemyclementine · 22/03/2023 19:22

That's a chicco pocket snack chair. I had them for my dc when they were little. There's no way on earth you'd forcibly strap a 3 yr old into it.

ksuu · 22/03/2023 19:30

Exactly. Picture was sent to nursery App and deleted in a few seconds but I did a screenshot. And manager said she doesn’t know about it, that I’m not sure…

What app do they use? Not that it matters, you have a screenshot, but ours use tapestry and it's posted by one person and approved by another - always someone at managerial level.

No. I have a three year old at nursery (just three) and the only thing she is strapped into is the walkodile that all the children get strapped into when they go for a walk. They each have a belt around their waist and it connects them all together. She's potty trained but even if she wasn't, she wouldn't be strapped down for a nappy change! If she was I'd be raising some serious concerns with the nursery safeguarding team.
