Stop Childcare Ratios Increasing!

I wonder if maybe people wouldn't mind sharing and signing this petition at all?

We lost out little man, Oliver Steeper, at 9 months old after a choking incident at his nursery.

A few days ago Boris Johnson proposed that a way to cut the cost of living would be to increase the number of children an adult is responsible for in early years settings. This cannot happen...there's other ways to decrease the cost of childcare, and to lump our childrens' safety in with a proposal to reduce MOT requirements is utterly shocking.

We need it to get to 100k signatures for the Government to consider it for debate. Please, if you feel able, sign and share.

Thank you so much everyone xxx

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 07/05/2022 09:01

Signed and shared on Facebook and my teaching union group.

Ohmych · 07/05/2022 09:12

I'm so sorry for your loss, he was so beautiful. Having worked in nurseries this is a bad idea. Ive signed the petition.

2ndBorn · 07/05/2022 09:18

I can’t even imagine your pain, I am so sorry for the loss of your beautiful boy. Thankyou for your post as I had no idea, signed & shared.

nearlyspringyay · 07/05/2022 09:18

Of course I'll sign. What a fucking ludicrous idea and I'm so sorry op.

Coatandhat · 07/05/2022 09:28

Signed. Thank you for starting this petition. There is nothing more precious than our children. It's shocking that he would suggest putting them at risk to reduce costs.

Alittlebitofthis · 07/05/2022 10:54

So sorry for your loss.

I have also signed ❤️

kimlo · 07/05/2022 11:04

I've signed.

It's not safe. It's not possible to provide safe or possible to provide quality learning experiences consistently if this happens. People will leave and move on to other jobs in a sector where it's already difficult to get and keep strong practitioners in to jobs anyway.

clopper · 07/05/2022 11:09

Have already seen and signed this which was shared by a worried friend who works in a nursery.

ManUforthewin · 07/05/2022 11:17

I’m so sorry for the loss of your beautiful boy.

i work in early years. We are paid so appallingly and are already run ragged with the ratios we have. Increasing these ratios could undoubtedly lead to more mistakes being made as staff are so exhausted and trying to do so many things at once.

It is becoming harder and harder to recruit decent staff as nobody wants to be paid so poorly for doing such a demanding job.

Mysterian · 07/05/2022 15:10

Sorry for your loss.

I work in childcare. There is no chance of this ever happening. The first nursery who relaxes the ratios may as well stick a sign out the front saying "We're shit, avoid us". And there's a major staff shortage at the moment. How will they attract staff when people will know they'll be doing 20-30% more work that other nurseries?
This was suggested a few years ago and was quickly sidelined then forgotten about. Same this time.

Londonnight · 07/05/2022 15:27

Signed. I am so sorry for your loss. When I heard about this a week or so ago I said then it is very wrong. I used to child mind and I couldn't imagine changing the ratios to have more children.

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 07/05/2022 17:29

It is at 28,000 so if we keep sharing it could get up to 100,000 which would be amazing.

Redcupbluecuppa · 07/05/2022 17:35

Signed. I am so sorry for your loss. What a beautiful little darling. Flowers

I am furious the government have proposed this and was thinking I would look for a petition to sign, so thank you for doing this OP.

LollyLol · 07/05/2022 17:40

Signed. Very sorry for Oliver, what a beautiful baby.

Unbelievable how little understanding Boris and his team show, to suggest something like cutting ratios for the care of small children. What a despicable suggestion. Hope you get your 100,000 signatures - honestly your petition s deserves a million or 10,000,000.

EdgeOfACoin · 08/05/2022 09:03

So sorry for your loss.

I have signed.

Redcupbluecuppa · 08/05/2022 12:21

Op @GPLady can I suggest you move this to a more prominent board to garner more signatures?

Second this.

So sorry for your loss OP. I've also signed.

Bump

transformandriseup · 09/05/2022 07:19

Signed. Childcare costs for under 2s are crippling but this is not the answer.

Dinoteeth · 09/05/2022 07:28

Signed - I also remember similar proposals 10 years ago. I think the current ratio is 1:3.
As it was pointed out to me then if you have 2:6 in a room, one person is nappy changing, that leaves the other staff member looking out for 5 kids.

Op really sorry to hear about your wee boy.

Wayfairtwo · 09/05/2022 10:39

@MNHQ can you help with this post so that it gets more visibility please?

SleepingStandingUp · 09/05/2022 10:51

GPLady · 06/05/2022 20:39

I know I've said it before but I just wanted to say thank you again, you're all absolutely incredible for giving a stranger this much support. Thank you from the bottom of my heart xxx

You might be a stranger but your son could have been ours, or the son of someone we loved.

Signed x
