Incorrect spelling of child’s name

Thegirlhasnamechanged · 17/03/2022 21:21

DS has recently started nursery and we were given a Mothers Day card that “he” made today at pick up (he is 13 months so I must have a child genius if he can cut out heart shapes!). I had a look once we got home and they’ve got his name spelled incorrectly. The manager has done the same incorrect spelling before in an email but apologised saying it must’ve been spell check. Would I be one of those parents if I bring it up when dropping off tomorrow or should I just let it go and mention it if happen again?

There is more than one spelling of his name but I personally think his chosen spelling is the more common and even if it wasn’t, youd think they would know the correct spelling of his name

Outing but his name is Isaac. The spelling they keep using is Issac. Not a massive deal (not pfb either!) but it’s already starting to grate on me!

Mentioned at drop off today that DD had noticed his name was spelled incorrectly in the card brought home. Room lead was like “oh is is Isaac or double S double A?” 🤦🏻‍♀️

I know it isn’t a big thing in the grand scheme of things but it’s just a bit of a irk when all his clothes/bags/nappy stuff is labelled with the correct spelling of his name. I work in the legal field and have it drummed into me about correct spellings too which is probably why I was a bit perplexed

I obviously know there are different variants but I didn’t realise when we picked DS’ name that he might have a lifetime of spelling his name on the phone etc 😂 at least we have a simple enough last name (though I was once asked if it it began with an E when it starts with the name of a common fruit 🤦🏻‍♀️)

It may be that there are lots of spelling of Isaac around and it may be that some people can't spell. We had a trainee teacher who wrote in our child's book 'moterway' which I didn't think was a particularly challenging word..
Our child has an unusual name but it's spelt phonetically. Lots of funny pronunciations. If it's someone we will not see again we just laugh it off. If it were her school / nursery I would correct them. They would be embarrassed to think he was there 3 years and all that time they have been spelling his name wrong?

DublinFemale · 18/03/2022 09:21

I have an unusual name but it is spelt exactly as it sounds once it is pronounced correctly. There is a shorter recognised version, but that is not my name.

I have had my name shortened, disbelieved, including a manager demanding I provide evidence that my name is my name.

My mom let it go as a child, which has resulted in people refusing to use my name, not that they can actually spell the wrong name correctly either.

My biggest bug bear is in work the inability to have my name spelt wrong in emails constantly either sent to me or in reply. Seriously my name in the address.

Just look at the email spelling and copy, not difficult, but it appears to beyond the intellectual ability for many people.

I call people out now when it is blatant and persistent.

Oh this bugs me too and my name (as far as I know) doesn’t have a different spelling. It is just rude when you sign off an email with, for example, Emma and they reply with ‘Hi Emily’ 😒

DublinFemale Thegirlhasnamechanged agreed. It's not hard.

@SundayTeatime

I was definitely aware when choosing that ‘Issac’ is a variation of the name though, so surprised that many posters are so appalled. Yes, of course it is the wrong spelling in this instance, but it is still a name.

But it isn’t a variation of the name. There is one spelling. Isaac.

www.behindthename.com/name/isaac

You should contact the well respected name website Behind the Name to clear out the other languages section for Isaac then. They have dozens of versions of Isaac listed. I mean, what would the Hebrew language know about the name anyway…

Obviously the nursery should use the spelling that OP’s son uses - which is by far the most common spelling in the UK. It’s the 21st most popular name in England and Wales so hardly off the radar!

ShadowPuppets · 18/03/2022 09:43

I think you did the right thing raising it. I have a Bryony and we’ve had a few instances of ‘Briony’ spelling on things (which tbh I don’t actually mind, we were completely torn on which spelling we preferred right up until we registered her!) I’ve just politely said “ooh, sorry to be picky but just for the future it’s Bryony with a ‘y’ not an ‘i’” and it’s not been a problem after that.

LemonDrizzles · 18/03/2022 11:07

"Sorry I think my Issac came home with the other Isaac card. I could tell because my Issac is with two s's hehe" friendly.

And keep repeating.

All the best

DropYourSword · 18/03/2022 11:18

Acceptable at nursery (mine came home with some bizarre spellings at times). I wouldn't think it was ok if it was from school, but in nursery I think you just have to shrug it off.

purpleme12 · 18/03/2022 11:21

So strange all these people saying it's unacceptable at school but would be acceptable at nursery
As posted before

My child was older but still in nursery. At the age where they're trying to teach a child how to recognise and write their name. They'd put their letters on the table and my child had to stick them on in the right order. So they were actively teaching them their name
Well they added an extra letter in my child's name (her name is spelt the usual way).
They'd put a photo on the public nursery page where all the parents could see.
I wasn't happy at all. Put a comment on and it was taken down quickly after. I did ring and I let them know I wasn't impressed that they were teaching my child her own name completely wrong!

I'm pretty if it came to it you wouldn't be happy if they were being taught to spell their name wrong

It isn't acceptable at nursery.

Lots of 4 year old nursery children can spell their own names. Some like my DD can spell it before that age.

DropYourSword · 19/03/2022 05:44

It's not about the kids though @RedWingBoots - in nursery some of the staff might actually struggle with spelling. So that's why it didn't fuss me there.

Nursery is all about the kids, though.
CaptainMyCaptain · 19/03/2022 07:24

@inheritancetrack

wouldnt bother me in the slightest.
It should do. Every time the child sees the name that way it is reinforcing the wrong spelling - yes I know 13 month olds can't spell but they will gradually be learning to recognise the whole thing.

As an Early Years teacher I occasionally spelled a new child's name wrongly on coat pegs or name cards but I always corrected it immediately and made sure I didn't do it again. A child's name is a very important thing.

DropYourSword · 19/03/2022 08:14

I feel you've missed my point @Blimecory!

watcherintherye · 19/03/2022 10:06

I could understand this more, if it was Issac’s mum complaining that her ds’s name is being spelt Isaac, which is the default spelling, and by far more common than Issac, I would have thought. It sounds like the nursery worker is vaguely aware there is a double letter in the name, isn’t quite sure which one, and has plumped for ‘ss’!

Fivebeanchilli · 19/03/2022 10:29

This would bother me because Issac is a different name, pronounced differently. I would say something.
My DD has a name with a common spelling, a relatively common alternative spelling and a very rare spelling. We chose the most popular after debating for a while. A huge number of letters/cards that came for birthdays in primary school or come from random people use a spelling that doesn't exist at all. (And it's not an unusual name. It's been in the top 100 for years). But I don't correct them because at least it's still pronounced the right way.

Daqqe · 08/04/2022 22:36

My DDs name was always spelt incorrectly at nursery. It’s a common-ish name but we spell it the less common way. Can’t say it bothered me, I acknowledge we spelt it a way that was probably going to get muddled 😅🙈 School spell it correct but it’s typically incorrect on every party invite we get!

Hey ho. My name ends in a y but it was always spelt with an ie growing up. I was never offended 🤷🏼‍♀️

ChocolatemilkBertie · 18/04/2022 23:00

I also would say it wasn’t acceptable at either school or nursery.

A totally one off mistake is forgivable because at the end of the day we are all human and everyone will make an error somewhere along the way, despite however many times you check. As long as it’s quickly rectified it shouldn’t cause a fuss.

I once had two children with the same name but a name that can be spelt a 2 or 3 ways (think along the Isobel / Isabel lines). I made a mistake on the peg labels and used the wrong Isabel, so Isabel Smith instead of Isobel Smith. Child was old enough to notice and got upset and mum kindly wrote a polite note, her name was correct everywhere else for example the online journal. It was fixed, I apologised. No harm done. No grudges held.

I would expect in something like a Mothers Day card, they would be checking spelling against the register. Very different to a tiny pencilled name on the back of a painting.

The best spelling error I made wasn’t a name, the children had made pumpkin hats and masks at Halloween and I uploaded it online for parents, a nice picture of them all in a row by the nursery vegetable patch. Except the auto correct changed the word pumpkin to punks, so the line read “Here are all the preschool punks ready for some Halloween fun!”. It got a few laughs.
