Incorrect spelling of child’s name

Thegirlhasnamechanged · 17/03/2022 21:21

DS has recently started nursery and we were given a Mothers Day card that “he” made today at pick up (he is 13 months so I must have a child genius if he can cut out heart shapes!). I had a look once we got home and they’ve got his name spelled incorrectly. The manager has done the same incorrect spelling before in an email but apologised saying it must’ve been spell check. Would I be one of those parents if I bring it up when dropping off tomorrow or should I just let it go and mention it if happen again?

There is more than one spelling of his name but I personally think his chosen spelling is the more common and even if it wasn’t, youd think they would know the correct spelling of his name

Outing but his name is Isaac. The spelling they keep using is Issac. Not a massive deal (not pfb either!) but it’s already starting to grate on me!

I’m sure the nursery/nursery worker would want to know. It doesn’t make them look very good that they either don’t know how, or can’t be bothered, to spell a common name correctly.

purpleme12 · 17/03/2022 22:35

Surprised how many people say they'd ignore it

I think it's really important actually
My child was older but still in nursery. At the age where they're trying to teach a child how to recognise and write their name. They'd put their letters on the table and my child had to stick them on in the right order. So they were actively teaching them their name
Well they added an extra letter in my child's name (her name is spelt the usual way).
They'd put a photo on the public nursery page where all the parents could see.
I wasn't happy at all. Put a comment on and it was taken down quickly after. I did ring and I let them know I wasn't impressed that they were teaching my child her own name completely wrong!

CurlyhairedAssassin · 17/03/2022 22:38

Yeah, it IS important, OP. I would tell them the correct spelling.

mnahmnah · 17/03/2022 22:41

Our travel agent has just spelt our child’s name wrong on the holiday booking. So now all aspects of our flights, hotel etc have to be changed. I emailed her the exact names in the first place. She just decided to change it. Stressed now that all aspects will be changed!

JennyHogon · 17/03/2022 22:41

There is no such name as Issac. Nursery workers should be able to spell the children's names. I'd mention it in the way you propose to.

Lockdownmummy · 17/03/2022 22:42

I've been this parent and I did mention it til they got it right. It even got to the point of working out which staff member it was (incorrect spelling on an accident form rather than just his daily sheet). Never rude or angry about it but did just say every time it happened.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 17/03/2022 22:48

By the time a dc leave nursery they should be able to identify their name so surely it needs to be spelled right? Although Dd is Heidi and her spelling varied hugely as to how many e and i letters appear and the order. She’s 10 and corrects people now. I thought it was quite a well known easy to spell name but apparently not.

Blossom64265 · 17/03/2022 22:50

They need to figure it out. He is learning his name passively little by little. Mistakes do happen and they will happen again, but you shouldn’t politely correct them each time.

1Micem0use · 17/03/2022 22:58

Theyll have encouraged him to stick the pre cut out hearts on. It's great for encouraging fine motor skills. Im sure they arent pretending he cut them out!

saraclara · 17/03/2022 22:59

I was a teacher, and I was infuriated when children's names were misspelled or mispronounced by my colleagues. Names are important, and it's a matter of decency and respect that we spell and say them correctly.

So yes, correct them every time. It's not even a difficult name.

mathanxiety · 17/03/2022 23:05

Issac is just plain wrong. It's the spelling used by people who don't read much or put a lot of thought into written communication, and spelling isn't their strong point.

However, I would judge a nursery by a lot of other elements - are the staff pleasant, kind, and patient, are they alert about safety, and does your DS seem to like them?

He won't notice how they spell his name, so if all else is well I would overlook this carelessness.

hogangog · 17/03/2022 23:09

it always, um, amuses me on threads about names when so many people declare 'that's not a name!'. maybe not in english, no. Isaac is Hebrew and used in English, but Issac is the Welsh spelling (and pronounced ee-sack with a hard s).

i would correct them every time @Thegirlhasnamechanged - names are important and if you wanted it to be spelled Issac then that's the name you would have given him Smile

MiniDaffodils · 17/03/2022 23:11

Yes correct them. I have never seen Isaac spelt Issac- that would be pronounced Iss(as in hiss)-ack!

ItsDinah · 17/03/2022 23:16

I would embroider or fabric paint his name on his clothes. Maybe the spelling will sink in.

JacquelineCarlyle · 17/03/2022 23:17

That's totally the wrong spelling and would really bug me. I'd have to correct them - wouldn't be rude about it but would absolutely want it fixed.

Amlaughingsomuchnot · 17/03/2022 23:17

I have worked for the same company for 6 years and they still spell my name wrong…think 2letters rather than 1…irritating but cannot get too annoyed about it ! My son has a name that is very English but can be spelt two ways…he really doesn’t care anymore!

Absolutely love the name Heidi…sorry I know it’s not the point of the thread 🙂
Thewindwhispers · 17/03/2022 23:24

Definitely correct it each time. If they can’t teach him to spell correctly they should give up trying to teach it at all!

Isaac. Everyone knows that. Never seen Issac written anywhere except your post.

LondonQueen · 17/03/2022 23:27

Your spelling is the correct one surely though? I would definitely bring it up in case they have the wrong name on their records (has been known before)

Creameggs223 · 17/03/2022 23:37

Tell them my daughters name was spelt wrong on everything when she started school peg, tray, books, I told them for about a week untill I said how will she learn how to write her name correctly when it's displayed wrong on everything next day they had all been changed.

watcherintherye · 17/03/2022 23:58

He won't notice how they spell his name,

He will eventually, when they are getting him to practice writing his name before going to school.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 18/03/2022 00:07

We know a family with an Issac. They aren't Welsh and pronounce it the 'normal' English way. They just liked the name and it didn't occur to them that spending three seconds searching online might be a worthwhile use of a moment of time in checking the spelling of the actual name that they were about to give to an actual human being.

If you are going for the 'traditional' (in England) name, Isaac is the only correct spelling. I get that a double 'a' is unusual and you may not see how it would be spelled that way, but a double 's' (with that z-like pronunciation) also makes no sense. If they'd chosen 'Isac' or 'Izak', I would have understood it more, but it turns out they just didn't see it as important at all.

Do you by any chance work at OP's son's nursery?
RosaBaby2 · 18/03/2022 04:59

I'd definitely correct it, they won't mind. It's happened at work before where once someone spells something wrong everyone follows.

We've had a few bits went home with the spelling Luka instead of Luca (our spelling) turns out there's another child called Luca and they get confused and sent the wrong things home.

No one will mind you letting them know. I would have thought Isaac was simple as it's the popular spelling of a well known name!

Soontobe60 · 18/03/2022 05:10

@BlingLoving

I find it incredibly offensive and I absolutely would, relentlessly, correct it. Politely and lightly to start but progressively more firmly if it isn't fixed.
You need to get out more if you find this ‘incredibly offensive’!
