Incorrect spelling of child’s name

Thegirlhasnamechanged · 17/03/2022 21:21

DS has recently started nursery and we were given a Mothers Day card that “he” made today at pick up (he is 13 months so I must have a child genius if he can cut out heart shapes!). I had a look once we got home and they’ve got his name spelled incorrectly. The manager has done the same incorrect spelling before in an email but apologised saying it must’ve been spell check. Would I be one of those parents if I bring it up when dropping off tomorrow or should I just let it go and mention it if happen again?

There is more than one spelling of his name but I personally think his chosen spelling is the more common and even if it wasn’t, youd think they would know the correct spelling of his name

Outing but his name is Isaac. The spelling they keep using is Issac. Not a massive deal (not pfb either!) but it’s already starting to grate on me!

Definitely tell them each and every time they get it wrong. That is awful and I wouldn't care about being 'that parent'.

Don't be mean about the card though, you'd be sad if they didn't bother at all, it's hard with that age group to get it right.

stickygotstuck · 17/03/2022 21:25

Do correct them each time, be polite but relentless. It's his name.
Among other things, DS will learn to spell his own name incorrectly!

Alfixnm · 17/03/2022 21:25

Ugh this would annoy me too, although in fairness I'm sure it isn't a reflection of how well they look after him!

I think it's reasonable to raise it politely with the manager (again).... hopefully they are embarrassed enough by the repeat mistake to take it on board.

ODFOx · 17/03/2022 21:25

Mention it gently.
Issac is a very unusual spelling of Isaac but at this age the nursery nurses are caring for your son rather than teaching him spelling.
If he was in the 3YO room then it'd be time to be a bit cross about it.

HotDogKetchup · 17/03/2022 21:25

I would let it go over my head.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 17/03/2022 21:26

It's annoying but you get used to it. I have a Sofia so she sometimes gets the wrong spelling even from a teacher who previously spelt it right! I guess they're busy.

Oh definitely not going to be mean about the card as the gesture is lovely with his little scribble in there (I know from experience he would much rather eat the writing tool than do anything with it so impressed they actually got him to do something other than eat it!)

I think I’ll play it as a smiling comment about the incorrect spelling in the morning. I’ll grow progressively more stone faced with each occurrence 😂

Yes you would be That Parent. Can’t see that it matters. There are several spellings of dds make so I’ve had this a lot and I can’t get excited about it. I don’t think it implies anything bad, like the child isn’t being cared for properly. Don’t sweat the small stuff.

BurnDownTheDiscoHangTheDJ · 17/03/2022 21:29

Outing but my daughters name is Siobhan. Both nursery and now her primary school have spelt it all kinds of insane ways, from Shibon to Shivaughn (a low point). Me and DH (and now Siobhan) have a good laugh about it. It is what it is. Hell, I have a pretty common name in the bit of the U.K. I come from but there’s a silent letter in it that catches people out sometimes. I wouldn’t bring it up, personally.

inheritancetrack · 17/03/2022 21:29

wouldnt bother me in the slightest.

Thegirlhasnamechanged · 17/03/2022 21:29

My 3 year old opened the card before me and apparently recognises the pattern of DS’ name enough that she was like “where is the second A?” 😂

and yes, kids name has been spelt wrongly in the past. Elliot...Eliott...Elliott you know what i mean....

DancingBarefootOnIce · 17/03/2022 21:33

I’d let it go. It’s nice that they went to the effort of the cards. My son’s name can be spelt differently and I don’t correct if it doesn’t matter. Obviously if it’s official forms etc I would.

Sunnytwobridges · 17/03/2022 21:54

It wouldn't bother me if it was a one off, but if it was constantly then I would probably say something about it.

IggyAce · 17/03/2022 21:59

Do say something my dc had his name spelt incorrectly on his peg on his first day of nursery, I pointed it out and they corrected it. It certainly was a unique spelling they went with.

RLOU30 · 17/03/2022 22:02

Wouldn’t get worked up over this one bit and I’ve had the same problem re spelling of my DS name.
As to the card, yes it’s obvious they didn’t make it (sigh) it’s just something they do for the mums this time of the year. If you don’t want it pop it in the bin.

RoyKent · 17/03/2022 22:09

My name is Ashleigh/Ashlee/Ashley I've started to just except any variant

tothemoonandbackbuses · 17/03/2022 22:16

I’d correct it every time. School spell my sons name correctly (there is only one spelling) but mine incorrectly (three spellings) to the point I had to give them my work email as they repeatedly couldn’t copy the correct spelling from the form I filled in the computer so my personal email get school emails !

NannyR · 17/03/2022 22:24

I would continue to correct the staff - Issac is a spelling mistake, it's not an alternative spelling of Isaac. In the next year or two, he's going to start learning to recognise and write his name, you want to make sure he's learning the correct spelling. I once looked after a little girl who had the same problem (philippa, but nursery continually spelled it phillipa), it was on her coat peg, drawer, etc and on the card which she was learning to copy and recognise her name.

Well, I know an Issac. I keep spelling HIS name wrong. Because I spell it the right way. Wink
CurlyhairedAssassin · 17/03/2022 22:28

I don't mean I spell it wrong deliberately by the way. I sometimes forget that it's erm, an "alternative" spelling intentionally. I've never seen any other Issacs. But maybe it's a new variant.

SundayTeatime · 17/03/2022 22:29

Once I’d let it go. But not twice. Issac just isn’t right at all. It is not a variant spelling. It’s wrong. It’s a common enough name. Surely they should know how to spell it.

sofakingcool · 17/03/2022 22:30

I'm a nursery worker and I'm want to know if I was messing up

BlingLoving · 17/03/2022 22:31

I find it incredibly offensive and I absolutely would, relentlessly, correct it. Politely and lightly to start but progressively more firmly if it isn't fixed.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 17/03/2022 22:32

I've also heard of a boy's name whose parents pronounce it "Lee-uss"/"Lee-ass". So to me it sounds like it would be spelled "Lias", because that is a name I've heard of. Yet the parents gave him the spelling "Lais". Confused
