Would you send your 1 year old to a nursery where staff smoke during breaks?

I went to see a nursery yesterday, where I am going to enroll my 1 year l old, I noticed staff smoking during their lunch break. I am all for people doing what they want during their breaks, however what I am worried about is smoke still being on clothes etc. Any mums out there with similar experiences with their nurseries? Thanks

I'm sorry but how do you feel about them discussing anal sex in front of 3 year olds, heard this myself from students whilst observing my own students, who weren't doing this btw. Grin

Even as an employer you can't ask if someone smokes. Have any child minders or nannies been asked? If so you can tell them they have no right to ask what you do in your free time.

I work with older children and I smoke in my breaks. I always have a coat/some type of cover on . Dump coat when inside, wash my hands and I also use hand sanitizer, gum and body sprays.

As for bad example... I live locally and even if I didn't, I still saw kids from my class at the beach or on other days out (far far away) . They've seen me smoke if I was having one at the time.

I don't find your post offensive, just naïve.

All employers are required to have a smoking policy - if this nursery doesn't it would be worth checking what else they don't have policies for as this could indicate a sloppy approach. They even have to have a policy on smoking if none of the current staff are smokers.

However assuming you can find a nursery that has no smokers, what would your position be if after a year, the nursery took on a new staff member who did smoke ?

Good luck finding a nursery where they don't. Most nursery staff are at or close to minimum wage and from the social groups most likely to be smoking.

Oh dear God did you really just post that 😳

It's factual?

I used to work at a nursery where there were a few smokers and in the beginning there were no rules apart from being off site where public couldn’t see you. After a year or so the rules changed and you had to change out of uniform before you could smoke - it actually reduced the amount that the smokers smoked because it was such a hassle and most of them only had a fag at lunchtime.
I would not want my child to be cared for by someone who smokes - their hands and breath stinks. Anyone who says they don’t is a smoker who doesn’t notice it anymore.

Norland Trained Nursery Nurse here working in a Crèche - presumably not in the social group to which you are referring - I earn more than minimum wage but not nearly enough here in Ireland for my experience & qualifications.
I'm an ex smoker who wouldn't have dreamt of smoking in uniform or around any child in my care.
As a parent I would be more concerned with the calibre of a Nursery and it's staff than whether any member if staff smoked away from the premises tbh 🤨

No it's a presumption - some of us genuinely do the job because we love it despite the dire recompense 🙄

Where does it say that these smokers are likely to work in Nurseries - FFS

@HalfShrunkMoreToGo
Childminders can't have smoking on the premises so unless they worked with others would be breaking rules to smoke....you must be in sight or hearing at all times so smoke is going to be on premises as Gardens count.

Omg....do you know how many graduates work in childcare even on low wages? How many teachers, accountants, and rich Upper class smoke. Let alone the amount of proffesional addicts who escape being outed becouse they can afford their fix. Addiction to anything is not class determined
