Great new job...but what do I do about nursery pick up?

Hi Everyone,

Urgently in need of advice!

I've got a brilliant new job in the city, it's high powered and there won't be alot of flexibilty on working hours....which I have accepted.

My 16 month old daughter attends a nursery which she loves, but I won't be able to make it in time for the 6pm pick up. Neither will my partner as he finishes works and his job requires quite a bit of travel.

I don't really want to take her out of nursery, just because she loves it so much and have really see her thrive there. Do you think its realistic to find a babysitter/nanny to do pick ups at 6pm from the nursery and look after her only for an hour?

Let me know if you've been in a similar situation and how you avoided it also!

I once used a childminder to do an afternoon pick up from school and look after in her own home from 4pm - 6pm. It worked well

Hello - I have a similar problem. I use a babysitter who picks LO from the nursery and watches him at home until I/DH get back. To make it interesting for the babysitter, you can suggest she picks your LO a little bit earlier than 6, 5ish?

I was in this situation about a hundred years ago ( OK 12 years). I spoke to the nursery owner and she suggested asking one of the staff. Long story short lovely young woman took DS2 home, gave him his tea and eventually was bathing and putting him in pjs. Arrangement only ended when she and her DH moved away for his job.

That was a lovely solution and I have known other people do this too
However, most nurseries now have it written in their safeguarding policy that staff cannot babysit for parents

Is there any possibility that one of you can do dropoffs and the other does pickups?

My nursery has something called At Home which is designed for shift workers and hours outside normal opening hours and you have a member of staff in your home as and when you need it. Perhaps this circumnavigates the babysitting rule as it's a contract with the nursery? Although saying that I'm fairly sure they still offer babysitting too...
