Do I have to label all DDs clothing/possessions for Nursery?

And if so what with, please tell me life has moved on from sewing in labels like my Mother had to in my school clothes!

You do if you ever want to see them again.

I have used many many name labels, sew on, stick on, you name it. I now use a normal marker pen.

I label the stuff I don't want to loose. Use a permanent marker and just write surname or initials on the wash label (use surname so I can re-use for more than 1 child!). TBH though nursery are pretty good with keeping track and we've never lost anything yet.

ditto. for shoes and coats I use iron/stick on labels from stuckonyou (which are lovely, but expensive - I also have some cheap ones that do the same job on ebay) Bag tags for their bags. Write on anything else with a pen on the wash label. Socks - always cheap socks to nursery - never let them wear the nice gap ones! I can't be ar*ed to label those but they always disappear.

Another one with a fabric pen - so much quicker and easier!

Depends on the size of the nursery and the value of the item.
Ds's nursery is very small so they staff know which coat belongs to which child. We're told not to bring any clothes we care much about, as they do get mixed up a bit but I don't think we've lost any (20 months later).

I label hats and suncream and coats but nothing else. And the only things that have been lost were 2 washable nappies when they had locum staff in and the staff chucked the whole nappy away - of course that included the one and only brand new nappy I'd ever got!

Actually more difficult is not gaining clothes as sometimes ds comes home in nursery clothes and I have to remember which ones to give back (sometimes I give them a bag of outgrown ones, so it balances out, I hope)

But this nursery made it very clear that nursery clothes will get mucky and if you want your dc in designer clothes that stay nice, don't send them there. A friend has her ds at a nursery where all the other kids are in designer clothes (and parents complain about paint etc, but it's the only nursery in the village), and laughs when they ask if some found clothes are hers. I said she should take all the unclaimed clothes and sell them on Ebay!

Label everything you want to see again because yes while us nursery workers can generally spot and recognise coats that come in usually sometimes we get it wrong and if its not marked as so and sos child we wont know especially if two coats are the same and the same age same goes for shoes jumpers ect you never think someone else will have the same in the same size but it happens a lot

most coats have a label inside for names ect but you can buy labels you can iron on or if you dont want to do that fabric pens, permanant markers ect and dont send in nice clothes its not a fashion parade and never send in anything white you are asking for it to come back covered in green paint
