Arrrrgh! Another mother at dd's nursery!

Her ds really stands out. She dresses him in the most outrageously OTT outfits to go to nursery, he has more shoes than I do all from Spain/Italy etc. Today he was wearing a silk romper top and it was already dirty by the time my DD got to nursery. everyone is always complimenting the mum and she loves it and is always playing it down, you can tell she is thrilled.

When I asked her how much she spent on her son's (she doesn't wear flashy clothes herself) wardrobe she told me that her two closest friends worked in the childrenwear business and most of his clothes were samples, she didn't agree in keeping stuff for best and didn't care if things got ripped or stained as long as her boy was happy

Argh she was so so smug, I can't stand people like that!

Just read this and didnt really get nts point at first, i was with most of the rest of you and still think it prob is jealousy but if nt is struggling for money and really cant afford/has to save hard for nice clothes for her children, for someone else to say of their childs fancy clothes, 'oh these old rags no they're just given to me i let them run around and ruin them all they want' could easily be very very annoying and seem fairly smug.
I know thats not exactly what she said and prob not how she meant it but i could understand if thats how nt took it. Like if you were struggling for food and see someone who gets caviar and steak for free so feeds it to their cat!!

Then again i could be completely wrong and maybe she is just a troll but giving her the benefit of the doubt

my friend in Canada used to get free samples from her SIL and it was totally fab. She used to tell us what clothes faded/fell to bits in the laundry etc etc. Her poor boy was a bit of a clothes horse as we paraded him trying to decide what looked good!

nightowl · 02/09/2005 08:02

when my ds was a baby he had a pair of shoes for every outfit and they had to match EXACTLY. so did the hat in fact. all the shoes were cheap soft shoes though.

my dd's clothes are mostly handed from a friend or my cousin..i very rarely buy any. some are designer, some still with labels on...but i dont BUY them!!

dd only has two best dresses, a summer party dress and a christmas party dress. all other clothes are worn as and when. we only have different clothes for painting.

Notelling ...
I normally don't get involved in threads like this but what you said made me think.
Do you know anything about 'smugmum' at all? Her circumstances I mean?
I ask because I have a friend who years ago was a single mum on benefits. She hadn't a penny to rub together. In fact, there was a time when her evening meal was her daughter's left overs.
BUT, her child was always beautifully and immaculately dressed. All her daughter's clothes were samples from a friend who worked for a kids clothes design company. She hardly ever bought anything for her and if she did it was the cheapest of cheap. And she was always happy when we commented on how lovely her DD looked.
She had a crap life and the only pleasure she got was seeing her little girl looking nice and pretty.
Perhaps this may be your smugmum's situation?
Her manner may be a bit unfortunate and seem smug to you but there may be much more going on there than you think.

I haven't posted on here for ages. I wanted to add to this thread that the mum I could not stand is in fact the nicest, sweetest lady ever. To cut a long story short she washed and pressed all her ds's outgrown clothes and gave them to me for ds. She found out we were going through a rough patch financially but was really gracious when she gave them to me very discreetly, mentioning that I had commented many times about his extensive wardrobe .

I feel like such an idiot, it just goes to show how wrong you can be about yourself and others.

rummum · 09/11/2005 21:14

hope you like silk romper suits

edam · 09/11/2005 21:16

Glad it's ended on a positive note.

frannyandzooey · 09/11/2005 21:21

What an extraordinary twist!

Cam · 09/11/2005 21:57

Still don't believe a word of it......

Cam · 09/11/2005 21:59

Especially as notelling says lower down that she's got daughters - why would she want boys' clothes?

notelling · 10/11/2005 08:35

Cam....yawn... not bothered by your posts but thought perhaps I would reply to explain. My ds doesn't go to nursery yet as he is 5 months old. I mention my DD as she goes to nursery with this person's DS.
I also don't mention my inside leg measurements but can assure you Cam I have two of those.

There really is no need to make me feel worse than I do already.

So are you keeping the boy's clothes (that I thought you didn't like) for your son then?

ameli · 14/11/2005 00:52

ladies ladies,

i have read all of your post and i can tell you, you guys are so funny. Why not give Notellin a break, after all it seems that she is trying to make ammnds but it seems that some of you just cant , LET IT GO!! Whats the matter some of you got a severe bout of pmt? i agree that it is up to smugmum to dress her kids in watever she likes, i hate anyone judging me on my child, dress behaviour , habits etc. I think the prob NT, is that you have touched a raw nerve.
