Is Labour going to call a GE?

Lots of speculation in the press about the Government having so little support that effectively they’ve lost their mandate to Govern so any leadership change would have to trigger a GE. Is this likely? They don’t strike me as people who are overly keen on the opinions of the electorate in general to be honest, so I think they’ll just crack on.

They’ve governed by spite and no matter what issues the U.K. has, it is not a nation of petty spiteful people. They miss judged people basically. Their list of enemies of the people who needed a ‘reckoning’ is just too wide that it’s basically anyone who’s not state dependent. It started with non state educated children, then pensioners, then farmers, then employers, then landlords, small business owners, pubs, then home owners, then people who want to pay into a pension, then people who earn more than £35k and now graduates. There’s barely any families not damaged by their ideological targeting, under the pretext to fund black holes which they later admit didn’t exist or to fund 6500 teachers that never happened and won’t. Like I say, the U.K. has its issues but it’s really not the petty hateful jealous easily manipulated society Labour thinks it is.

Jeez. The right used to say use phrases like 'frothed' about 'leftists'.

There has NEVER been a UK Government in this situation before, that’s the point.

Of course there has been
It's not gonna happen
Their support isn't as terminal as the right wing media would have you believe

Jiski · 08/02/2026 10:57

No chance. Possibly a leadership election, but they’d be mad to give up a majority in the house. Also, it would be a disaster if Reform got into power so they need to put a stop to them first.

Donttellhim · 08/02/2026 11:04

No, he will not call a general election and frankly why should he. The baying crowds are mostly reform idiots, without a working brain cell. I said it and I mean it. If you are reform you’re either stupid or a billionaire, you can decide which one you are. If you’re a woman backing reform then shame on you, I hope you’re not too fond of control of your body oh and don’t mind giving up your vote too!

Now I’ve always vote Labour, but I won’t again until they move closer to the left, not a centralist party aiming and failing for the popular vote. The baying crowds are highly influenced by the predominantly right wing media and bots! They ain’t so bright!

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 08/02/2026 11:08

I rarely do a LOL but this one deserves several. The faux naivety and the supposed innocence of the question.

Not a singular chance that any government in the position of the current one and with such a majority would call a GE so soon after the last one.

Some of his own party want him out.

They are not calling for a GE, though.

TheNumberfaker · 08/02/2026 11:51

Has the OP been asleep for the past decade?

Whatever you may read in the press, it is now in the PM’s control as to when exactly we will have the next election, with the very latest date being 15th August 2029 if the PM chooses not to dissolve parliament before its automatic dissolution on 9th July 2029.

The media may crow about how an election “should” be held if the PM “doesn’t have the support of the public” but that is irrelevant to our parliamentary democracy.

I would also remind those of a right wing persuasion (Tory/Reform are all the same) that there was no immediate GE when May/Johnson/Truss/Sunak took over as PM.

Reallyneedsaholiday · 08/02/2026 11:58

RainyBea · 07/02/2026 09:57

It’s quite a unique situation, they simply don’t have any support.

The only place they “don’t have support” is from the billionaires who own the MSM and the wallies who believe the headlines.
They are far from perfect, but still better than any of the alternatives on offer. And why on Earth would they call a GE when they have such a resounding majority? They would probably still win, but would likely lose some seats. What would anyone gain from that? GEs cost the taxpayer around £100,000,000. I dint know about you, but I can think of much better uses for that money.

StressedLP1 · 08/02/2026 12:01

The media is owned by right wing billionaires. They never play defence for a Labour government. That’s why you see such a hoo-hah in the press over Starmer but not actual cunts like Farage.

Umidontknow · 08/02/2026 12:06

Alouest · 07/02/2026 09:58

Don't be ridiculous. Starmer might not be very popular but he is in no way as unpopular as most recent Tory PMs and the only one of them who called an early general election was Theresa May, which turned out to be a bit of a mistake.

Opinion polls say differently.

You’re delusional. You should get your head out of the daily mail or wherever you’re the crap you’re writing about. Presume you were pleased with Boris during Covid and the rest of them dancing on the graves of the elderly that died as they merrily sent infected people back, oh and whilst they partied those elderly people they left to the mercy of the virus. Or the 10 years and more of austerity that came before that, which stripped public services to the bone, a major cause of the hardships we are now all facing…even the black and brown people!

I am not even voting Labour, but by god wind your neck in!

EasternStandard · 08/02/2026 17:39

Donttellhim · 08/02/2026 16:07

And?

It’s clearly not all Reform bots or whatever else you blame Labour’s failings on.

Labour and Starmer have done this to themselves.

Justthethingsthatyoudointhisgarden · 08/02/2026 18:19

They are a democratically elected government. I'm sure we can all guess who would get your vote 🙄

I don't think there's a lot of support for a GE from anyone who doesn't want Reform.

Reallyneedsaholiday · 09/02/2026 15:36

I don't think there's a lot of support for a GE from anyone who doesn't want Reform.

Eastern wasn't lobbying for an election, simply pointing out to another poster that Labour's demise is of its own making and that this opinion isn't restricted to reform bots.

To which the reply was...'I guess we all know who you would vote for'...
