Is Labour going to call a GE?

Lots of speculation in the press about the Government having so little support that effectively they’ve lost their mandate to Govern so any leadership change would have to trigger a GE. Is this likely? They don’t strike me as people who are overly keen on the opinions of the electorate in general to be honest, so I think they’ll just crack on.

Starmer won’t do this. Even though he’s unpopular he has a tough skin (as a politician and ex barrister he needs to have one!).

Having said that I know a lot of people who’d vote for Reform when there is a next GE.

There's lots of speculation that Starmer may be replaced because he's unpopular with the public and MPs. You understand that doesn't mean a general election though, right?

You'd think she would know that, given the revolving door that we had under the last Tory government.

Pearlstillsinging · 07/02/2026 10:17

I do wish people who are entitled to vote would educate themselves about how our system works!
MPs are elected for a full term, even if they have the whip withdrawn by their Party they can remain in their seat as Independent MPs. The Labour gvt has a huge majority, why on earth would they call a GE early? That usually only happens when a small majority has been eroded by losing by-elections, which is making it difficult to get gvt business through Parliament.

In fairness OP has not said they're entitled to vote in UK elections. I wouldn't bet that everyone who's asked this question on MN lately is.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 07/02/2026 10:14

I suspect that the OP has heard some of the opposition parties calling for a GE and not realised that this is a common tactic for opposition parties in response to every government whenever they are going through a rough patch. So she thinks it might actually happen.

Tbf it is really irritating when opposition parties do that. Complete waste of time when (nearly) everyone knows that's never going to happen.

I agree, but it's a common tactic.

Upstartled · 07/02/2026 10:22

No, we are in for a longer haul. Starmer will be allowed to extend his car crash through till May and take the blame for the local elections. Then we'll see a bloodbath for the next PM. After that, we might see a general election but it's not guaranteed.

It’s quite a unique situation, they simply don’t have any support.

As has happened countless times in our political history. No way are they going to call a GE now. Not going to happen.

Relentless posts from 'posters' with an agenda.

I bet if you asked the OP what the weather's like in Britain today 'she' wouldn't have a bloody clue.

You're joking right... many governments have been in this position and not called a GE. I feel this is all wishful thinking on many people's parts and perhaps yours op!

I don’t think we’ve seen a situation where the Government is despised by over 86% of the electorate before. It’ll have to be a GE or further ramp the authoritarian policies for people to remain compliant. Very interesting times for the UK

There has NEVER been a UK Government in this situation before, that’s the point.

It might not be Starmer, but whoever’s next will probably give it a go for a while.

Elderlycatparent002 · 07/02/2026 10:30

No. Definitely not. It would be very stupid to do that.

Oh mate, that’s the most deluded thing I ever read 😂

I know- have they actually looked at any of the polls? 😳

Happystuff · 07/02/2026 10:31

Another ridiculous, faux innocent, click bait thread to block.

Traffic to MN must be low.

The posting styles are similar too. What a coincidence.

You must be very young or very stupid - or both. Are you from the USA?

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 07/02/2026 10:33

Oh look - another first time poster who completely fails to understand how UK democracy works suddenly leaping onto MN to demand an election.

Have you only very recently taken an interest in politics, OP?

Are you aware of the Poll Tax riots?

DogAnxiety · 07/02/2026 10:34

Speculating that a GE will be called is a well-known tactic for opposition parties and those seeking to drive political events in a particular direction.

Nanda66 · 07/02/2026 10:34

No. And they do have some support. With the exception of their handling of the economy, which I think is terrible, I think they’re doing an ok job.

MifsBr0wn · 07/02/2026 10:35

I doubt it. They would be utterly destroyed if they did. And they know it.

The thing is, OP, some of us live here, and we've been following politics for many years.

Where do you live, and when did you start to take an interest in UK politics?
