Is Labour going to call a GE?

RainyBea · 07/02/2026 09:52

Lots of speculation in the press about the Government having so little support that effectively they’ve lost their mandate to Govern so any leadership change would have to trigger a GE. Is this likely? They don’t strike me as people who are overly keen on the opinions of the electorate in general to be honest, so I think they’ll just crack on.

Report in the Telegraph does not = true.

Anyway, there isn't going to be a GE anytime soon.

In terms of new leadership, the dark horse to replace Starmer is Al Carns. I'd be in favour of him. Fresh blood. None of the baggage of Rayner, Streeting and Cooper.

PandoraSocks · 07/02/2026 11:26

EasternStandard · 07/02/2026 11:08

That’s from Starmer allies as pp said, it’s coming from his team as they want him to stay.

They're all briefing against each other.

'Twas not what I meant when I said "it all makes sense now".

And what is your evidence for your conspiracy theory that Labour is doing that?
Note - swivel-eyed loons posting on X isn't actually evidence.

Or swivel-eyed articles in the Telegraph.😁

Because it is Starmer allies who are warning that a Rayner coup would trigger a general election this time and it mirrors Lammy's finger wagging at Burnham, only two weeks ago. This idea that if Starmer leaves then the country will land in the hands or Reform only serves Starmer. Because as it has been pointed out, this isn't necessary or likely - unless, I suppose, Labour cannot find anybody to competently manage the party and the infighting stalls all the legislature going through Parliament.

GladAzureLion · 07/02/2026 11:31

You’re right that this is a unique situation, there really hasn’t ever been a more loathed Government according to all the polls and morally and for the sake of the country there should be another GE. But let’s be honest, they will try everything to stay in power (see giving children the vote) and that is their right as elected Government.

Upstartled · 07/02/2026 11:31

Burnham warned not to ‘rock the boat’ with Starmer leadership challenge | The Independent https://share.google/EdQi2CcdP2MyMJsBp

(Referring to Lammy) ..."He said any change of leader would “probably” mean Labour, which is currently trailing Nigel Farage’s Reform UK in the polls, would be forced to call an early election"

I see. Rayner is also quoted as saying she warned against Mandelson appointment.

Those loyal to Labour might think it’s all going great and it’s one big happy time for them but they are briefing against each other daily. And rn she’s winning on that front.

And none of this kind of shit ever occured under the last Tory government?
I just can't imagine a disunited Tory party while in power.

I know you are keen for Rayner to be the next leader, but I don't think it will happen now.

So you agree it’s happening now then? Good.

Starmer is briefing out about Rayner triggering a GE, and Rayner is successfully countering it.

Unlike Burnham she is in a formidable position to go for it.

I don't have access to the article, just the title. Are MPs suggesting that the reason Truss shouldn't leave is because it might trigger a general election, even though they know that is not the likely outcome of booting her out?

Excuse me? Easternstandard said in a post it would be good to have two strong women fronting the two main parties (i.e. Rayner and Badenoch). It surprised me.

But why?
What have they done that means they are so "loathed"? I despair of people. The previous incumbents fucked education, fucked the NHS, fucked our prosperity with Brexit. Did people really expect that labour could miraculously solve all that in 2 years?

This can’t be a serious question, if you don’t follow current events why post. What shall we start with all the freebies, shall we talk about the dishonesty they tax avoidance, what about rhe winter fuel payments, the removal of the child benefit cap, the decimation of the North Sea and oil and gas industry, the huge tax grabs, the lying about the reasons. The list is fucking endless.

Removing Winter fuel allowance from wealthy pensioners is ok by me.

What freebies and tax avoidance? Are Tories, Reform etc all whiter than white in terms of sleaze?

Removal of child benefit cap taking large families out of poverty is ok by me too.

Decimation of North Sea industry - I will need to research but am confident it pales in comparison to the decimation of Brexit.

Sounds to me like you were never a Labour voter anyway?

Well, it certainly wasn't just withdrawn from wealthy pensioners, was it? The limit was at the pitiful pension credit. And of course, they had to u-turn on it. But not before they demonstrated how out of touch and incapable they are

They’ve governed by spite and no matter what issues the U.K. has, it is not a nation of petty spiteful people. They miss judged people basically. Their list of enemies of the people who needed a ‘reckoning’ is just too wide that it’s basically anyone who’s not state dependent. It started with non state educated children, then pensioners, then farmers, then employers, then landlords, small business owners, pubs, then home owners, then people who want to pay into a pension, then people who earn more than £35k and now graduates. There’s barely any families not damaged by their ideological targeting, under the pretext to fund black holes which they later admit didn’t exist or to fund 6500 teachers that never happened and won’t. Like I say, the U.K. has its issues but it’s really not the petty hateful jealous easily manipulated society Labour thinks it is.

Which black holes didn't exist? The 22 billion?
Can you provide evidence that it did not exist and that the cuts made as a result are "just for fun" to target certain groups vindictively?

The ‘black holes’ that didn’t exist used to justify 60 billion in tax raises
https://www.standard.co.uk/business/business-news/uk-government-prime-minister-budget-rachel-reeves-government-b1260700.html

I never suggested cuts have been made just for fun, I never even even mentioned any cuts. I mentioned all the disproportionate and narrow targeted taxes aimed at particular groups of people ,including children, for ideological reasons. Labours problem is their particular list of ‘wrong thinking people ’ is essentially now anyone who is not state reliant. They seriously miss judged the nations character and they will be heavily punished for it at the next election and probably the next three after that.

UK Government was ‘digging its own black hole’ before Budget, says Flynn

The Chancellor has been accused of misleading the public ahead of the Budget.
