Is Labour going to call a GE?

Lots of speculation in the press about the Government having so little support that effectively they’ve lost their mandate to Govern so any leadership change would have to trigger a GE. Is this likely? They don’t strike me as people who are overly keen on the opinions of the electorate in general to be honest, so I think they’ll just crack on.

Deary me.

MrTwisterHasABlister · 07/02/2026 10:37

I support them far more than I support any of the other parties.

You must be very young or very stupid - or both. Are you from the USA?

I don’t thinks there’s any cause for personal insults or casual racism.

Exactly.

I don’t think we’ve seen a situation where the Government is despised by over 86% of the electorate before. It’ll have to be a GE or further ramp the authoritarian policies for people to remain compliant. Very interesting times for the UK

further ramp the authoritarian policies for people to remain compliant

Could you explain more about the "authoritarian policies" as I don't know what you mean?

thedramaQueen · 07/02/2026 10:41

RainyBea · 07/02/2026 10:30

There has NEVER been a UK Government in this situation before, that’s the point.

This is VERY naïve. This comment shows you don't know what you're talking about and I don't mean to be rude here.

They might have very few saying that now.

No, we are in for a longer haul. Starmer will be allowed to extend his car crash through till May and take the blame for the local elections. Then we'll see a bloodbath for the next PM. After that, we might see a general election but it's not guaranteed.

I think May as well.

No, I don't think it will happen in May. Much of this rhetoric is being fed by Labour loyalists who are trying to get the hounds to back off Starmer in the wake of his current political harm of his own making. The threat of a general election is the cautionary tale.

If there is to be an election, it would be at the hands of a failed remodelling, and I don't think that would be in May - it would be when the markets gave them a hiding. So long after that.

SomedayIllBeSaturdayNight · 07/02/2026 10:48

Of course not! I think Starmer is a good man and I hope he sticks around.

Yes exactly. This is coming from Starmer and his allies in the party because he wants to stay in position.

I am disappointed in this government but I don't loathe them like I did the previous incumbents. They have been handed an absolute crock of shit, and have a terrible PR team and hostile press.

I asked if you were from the USA because you seem to know very little about how a parliamentary representative democracy works, or anything about British political history from the last 70 years.

Do you know anything about the Wilson/Callaghan government of the 70s?

American is a nationality, not a race.

ThatBlackCat · 07/02/2026 10:55

You clearly don't follow politics. Reform is so popular right now they will shit it in. Starmer and Labour want to hang on to office for AS LONG AS POSSIBLE. They go to election now, they know as well all know, they will LOSE. Why would they want to go to an election knowing they will lose? Maybe think a little.

Acommonreader · 07/02/2026 10:56

RainyBea · 07/02/2026 10:06

I think you’re right and they’ll try it but I just don’t see how it’s sustainable to Govern when nobody supports you.

A lot of people do support the government. Lots of people voted for them.I know that a lot of the press would have you believe otherwise but they have their own agenda . Why on earth would the government just throw away their majority position?
Do remember how hated Thatcher was? Johnson’s? The only thing that matters is the election results. Labour will remain in government, probably with a new PM until 2029.
Im not a big fan of KS by the way but the alternatives are shocking.

Definitely the opinion of most people I know. They feel labour could have been better but they certainly are not despised like the last lot!

I don’t know anyone who despises this government more than the last one. I don’t think KS is doing the best job but there are no comparisons to the Tory shit show we had before!

CanalLetty · 07/02/2026 11:01

It's May now is it?

It was "I think they’ll just crack on" in your original post just over an hour ago.

PandoraSocks · 07/02/2026 11:04

Ah, it all begins to make sense.

That’s from Starmer allies as pp said, it’s coming from his team as they want him to stay.

They're all briefing against each other.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 07/02/2026 11:14

There won't be a general election - anyone who suggests this is talking complete bollocks and doesn't have a fucking clue how UK politics works.
Let me explain something
Whether Starmer stays as PM or is replaced has no bearing on a general election.
To illustrate - can someone remind me, did we get a general election when May was replaced by Johnson mid-term?
Or when Johnson was replaced by Truss mid-term?
Or when Truss was replaced by Sunak mid-term?

Yes, they're just re-hashing the same lines they used to brief against Andy Burnham and make it palatable to those Labour supporters who feel like Starmer is failing to lead.

Tbf, conservatives weren't trying to gaslight their members into believing that a general election was the natural consequence of booting out the current pm.

And what is your evidence for your conspiracy theory that Labour is doing that?
Note - swivel-eyed loons posting on X isn't actually evidence.
