Hey everyone
I had an interview yesterday for GP receptionist and have now been invited for a 2 hour trial shift this Thursday.
Has anyone on her worked the same job and can share what I’m likely to expect
thank you! ☺️

Depends what the surgery set up is and the amount of Receptionists/admin staff on duty at any one given time. You'll be surprised what Receptionists need to know and remember to do the job, it's not just sitting on Reception booking people in. I've been doing the job for 17 years and I find it interesting and most patients are genuinely lovely. You'll get the usual not so lovely too. Be prepared to like cake, biscuits and chocolate as the lovely and appreciative ones like to gift. We are never without treats.

I worked in a GP surgery as a receptionist afew years back and I loved the job. It was varied and interesting. Trials are quite normal as it can be demanding, especially if people are distressed or awkward, but on the whole it’s a good job - I hope it goes well for you 😊

It's quite sad when February comes round and the Christmas biscuits and chocolates run out!

It's an incredible job. So varied and you can make the most of your skills there. There's so many sub roles apart from answering the phone there's document management, recalls, prescriptions, the list is endless. I was a GP for 32 years and saw so many staff come and go. The team working can be incredible. I loved teaching and explaining things to staff. My most important thing to say was "there's never a stupid question" as someone's life may depend on it. If you're unsure come and see me and we will go through it together.
We have had receptionists become nurses and train whilst working with us. Some come and you discover they've got amazing organisational skills or they have good IT skills. If you work in a good place it's a great job. I'd imagine you'll just be shadowing a receptionist answering the phone in your 2 hour shift. Good luck.
