Band 6 to 7 (NHS)

Hi all, can anyone tell me how long it took them to go from band 6 to 7?

Im non medical but still clinical, mental health. I applied for a band 7 but sadly was unsuccessful after interview. My feedback was good, was very close to getting the post. It just feels like posts are so few and far between though at the moment that I’m in a bit of despair. I also want to have a 2nd DC so was thinking to secure a b7 and then plan a 2nd….bit silly to plan life around work I know.

Any words of advice/own experiences to help me stay positive. I worry that after a 2nd DC and part time hours I’ll never progress. It all felt very ‘now or never’

What sort of clinical areas have you worked in - work in now / are applying for ?
have you acted up to a 7 role ?
done shadowing of a 7 ?
identified these sorts of things on appraisal objectives ?
have you taken on additional roles / training as a B6 ??
clinical supervision roles /
training and educating trainees and other staff ?

these are ways to increase chances of successfully obtaining a B7 as opposed to how long you are a B6 in my experience

I’ve undertaken a significant training which in other teams would be an automatic B7, it would mean crossing into a different area though which I don’t ideally want to do.
In the team I’m in, you can’t really ‘act up’ unless given a mat leave post if you get me, but you can take on more complex work which I have done anyway. I will raise at my appraisal to look over my areas of weakness/gaps

What's your professional registration, I'm struggling to understand.
It completely depends on what your profession is, how teams are structured, whether you want a clinical or managerial post etc.
I'm an RMN and got a band 7 within about 4 years of qualifying, as I was in the right place at the right time mostly, but I've completely stagnated since 😕

DD was six years qualified, she applied for a trainee AP post at a different trust and got it. Ended up moving trusts then moving house as the commute was tough, she has also spent the last two years studying for a PGDip to support the role. Certainly not an easy transition to the next banding, but loves her new trust and job.

I’m confused -
you are non medical - which generally means doctor of medicine
but you are clinical, in a mental health role - so RMN ?
you have done training that would generally mean an automatic B7 but you don’t wish to work on the teams that this happens in ??
are you a CBT therapist in NHS TT ?
its hard to advise further without more clarity -

@GaaNeen you are correct, I’m a CBT Therapist, and a Social Worker. In adults that is an automatic 7, but in children’s is it a 6. Unless you get a 7.

sorry for confusion everyone I made this post in the morning and probably wasn’t clear. Not medical but in a ‘clinical’ role.

i would be getting appraisal objectives updated to reflect career progression and look for opportunities to be taking on the roles the 7’s do in your area
