2 week old with cold

Hi everyone,

First time mum here and worried that my 2 week old has a cold. She generally seems ok in herself although a bit more fussy/hard to get to go to sleep. Her breathing sounds quite congested and she has been doing a lot of squeaking/snorting type noises. I pulled a large green bogie out of one of her nostrils today. She doesn’t have a temperature. She is feeding and producing wet nappies although maybe not feeding as ‘hungrily’ as before.

I’m freaking out a bit because I’ve heard that colds in newborns can be quite serious. My other half thinks she’s fine and there is no need to take her to doctor/a&e.

I’ve bought the frida mum sucker and saline spray, due to arrive today.

Looking for some advice - am I being overly anxious or can you not be too cautious?

As long as her temperature and breathing are ok, she's probably fine. Keep feeding as much as you can, and the snot sucker is great.

At 2 weeks are you still under the midwives? I'm sure they'd be happy to help.

Hi, OP!

It's completely normal to feel worried about your baby, you're not over reacting at all.

You're an amazing mum and it's our natural instinct to worry in these situations...

To be honest OP I would get her seen by the GP and just say you're worried she's developing a cold she sounds very congested.

You know your baby the best! And if this is unusual for her I would see a GP.

I was always told if baby is under 3 months and develops any symptoms of sickness then to see a dr regardless if baby has a fever.

You can phone the doctors and explain you're an anxious mum and the dr might give you a call back and they'll let you know whether they want to see you or not.

Even if it's nothing or something very minor it'll put your mind at ease xx

My 6 week old also has a cold, sounds similar to yours minus the green bogeys (hers are clear) and brought her to the GP this week. GP actually referred her to the children's A&E just because she's so young. In A&E the suctioned some of the mucus out of her nose and observed her Oxygen levels and heart rate for about 4 hours and asked us how much she had eaten in that time. They weren't too concerned and let us go home with strict instructions to come straight back if cough/breathing gets worse or she stops feeding. I'd bring them to the GP just to be on the safe side.

Aww, poor love! If you're combination feeding try to breastfeed as much as possible this week, as it'll contain antibodies to fight the lurgy. It'll also adapt to her hydration needs if she gets a fever. I really hope she feels better soon!
