Newborn clothing advice!

Hi all,

Looking for a little advice. Baby due mid March (Scotland) and as the weather here is incredibly unpredictable, I was wondering what the suggestions are for appropriate outdoor clothing around this time for baby? especially coming home from hospital.

I was thinking a vest, sleep suit, knitted wool cardigan, hat, mitts and a blanket? Or does anyone suggest a coat as well and then just remove before going into the car seat?

Thanks ☺️

no need for coat. all-in-one garments like sleepsuits are best for age 0-3 months because a baby doesn't have a waist and can't sit up. I always feel sorry for tiny babies in 'adult style' clothes like jeans / t-shirts / dresses that are hard fabrics and always too tight or too loose on a soft little body.

get sleepsuits in different types of fabric and you'll do fine. if it is cold, just put 2 sleepsuits on.

also, remember that some babies are born weighing 6lb or less (size newborn) and others up at 11lb (size 3-6 month clothes at birth) so you really can't predict what size clothes your baby will need. don't buy too much and order online once baby arrives.

We were gifted this fleece romper and my baby lives in it when we go out! It's a lot less rigid than a snowsuit and keeps her nice and warm. She's 3 months and it's been one of the best things we've had for her. Maybe look on Vinted for one second hand, or get something similar? Unless you're willing to pay £50 for a romper... I certainly wouldn't be no matter how much I love it 😂

Thank you! The fleece romper looks lovely and would be good for days when it’s very cold. I’ll have a look online once baby is here to see what size he’ll need.

DD2 was born 17th March, we dressed her in a vest, sleepsuit, hat and a cardigan sort of jacket if we were going out with a warm blanket. Once they're in the pushchair they're nice and covered anyway 😊
I think the lovely cardigan we had was from Matalan. It was fluffy inside but knitted outside, wasn't overly warm/big, perfect for pushchair or the car if it was cold

I'm sure there's a wee fleece in the Scottish Baby Box. Like a PP said, an all-in-one is probably best and cosiest for baby. People will buy you outfits but honestly, babygros are your friends. I'd say a vest, babygro, knitted cardie, blanket and hat will be fine (also in Scotland)

There is a fleece exactly like the one above in the baby box:

The baby box is great! Looked out the little grey fleece as I just washed everything that was in it, it’s 3-6 months but it’s exactly the type of thing I’m looking for. Cosy but not too heavy.
