In a total pickle.
Period May 13-18
Predicted Ovulation (33 day cycle) May 30
Dr Said 4-5 weeks pregnant June 18th
in ER on Friday with 3 days of abdo pain
they said the pain was from ovarian cyst and ruled out eptopic pregnancy

Vaginal ultrasound revealed 8mm sac with yolk, but no fetal pole, no heartbeat..
They said it could either be concerns of blighted ovum OR could just be too early, but that usually 8mm would have a heartbeat.

They told me to wait 72 hours to have another ultrasound.
Many women in forums seem to say blood tests are where it's at, but my OB and my GP said that even if there's no baby your numbers can keep doubling so ultrasound is the most important.

Well unfortunately found out on Thursday that while my husband changed jobs on June 3rd, his old jobs insurance expired June 30 but his new job is refusing to offer insurance until August 1..
This means that for July we have no insurance.
I had to pay $250 for an OB appointment today, to at least find out if I can take the antibiotics my GP wanted me on last week, and find out about D suppliments I've been prescribed...

She wnated to do Ultrasound but i explained I won't have insurance til August 1 and can't afford it.

I explained to her that I'm going to see if I can find a cheap ultrasound place to get one before August.
She agreed that that would be a good idea, and that she suggested I don't get one until 2 weeks after the ER one.. so Friday next week as Friday next week would be 8 weeks 5 days since my period and there should definately be a heartbeat then.

She said that 8mm is definately large to not have a heartbeat.. but that it could go either way...

She did say that if I start to miscarry at home it's safe to do so unless I start hemorraging pad after pad after pad.
So we scheduled an ultrasound with her for August 2nd...
but I will try to see if I can find a free or cheap pregnancy clinic of some kind next week

Didn’t want to leave you with no reply
I’m very sorry you’ve got a difficult time
This is a predominantly UK site so you may find the lining overseas board helpful with specifics- MN can move it for you if you ask them,
From a practical position, are there any free community or charity options available? Ask your practitioner because whilst I understand Medicare is v different surely they have a duty of care to you, in that if you need the ultrasound but don’t have it and then there is a later issue wouldn’t they have some responsibility? If they know you have nothing available maybe they can direct you differently?
All the best

mozzybites · 03/07/2018 00:44

I am sorry you are in this situation.
It is going to be so far from the expectations of woman in the UK in regards to the healthcare they receive that it is going to be hard for most posters to give you pointers.
It will make people grateful for the NHS however. I hope you find a solution.

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/07/2018 00:47

Are you in the US? Being specific could help, there are Mumsnetters in the US.

Are there organizations like Planned Parenthood who could help?

ElementalHalfLife · 03/07/2018 01:01

OP, did your DH's previous employer not offer COBRA to carry you over until the new benefits package kicks in? It's a legal requirement for businesses with more than 20 employees. If they're not required to provide COBRA and you are low income then check out your eligibility for Medicaid or coverage under the Affordable Care Act to tide you over. They should have provided your DH with all this information in his separation package. While I love this country (ex-Brit living in USA)in sometimes also hate it and this whole business of healthcare insurance provision here is guaranteed to make my blood boil. It's bloody outrageous in a so-called civilized country, one if the richest nations on Earth too. I'm so sorry this is happening to you, it must be terribly stressful at a time when you don't need stress.

Hi ladies,
My update is that there is no update
I found a place in Nashville that does free ultrasounds, but they said they would only do them after 12 weeks as they don't have the ability to see anything earlier than that.

Due to our inability to afford to pay without insurance we just are going to have to wait until August 1

I asked my husband to harrass his insurer to make sure we do actually have our card etc by August 1 as my OB booked me in for August 2nd.

If there's no baby I still can't afford a D and C without insurance.. so what's the point in finding out before we have insurance really.

I have not had any bleeding.
My boobs feel like they're going to explode and my husband gave me a Victoria Secrets voucher for my birthday so I asked them if they have any bras that prevent boobs moving..
They sold me a 36DD bra with a double layer and it still won't stop them moving..

I'm extremely fatigued. I'm sleeping 8 hours a day and then sleeping another 4 hours in the middle of the day

I am normally a 5-6 hour sleeper and a 16 hour a day worker

I'm self employed as a photographer and videographer, thankfully I don't have any weddings in July so I'm able to get away with all this sleep.
I don't know how women hold down actual day jobs with employers 8 hours a day with babies.

I'm trying to just not think about it. I will keep everyone posted

No bleeding, no vaginal discharge
do not want any form of sexual contact.. and if my husband so much as sneezes near my boobs it hurts so much I wanna give him a black eye.. lol.. #boobpain

ELEMENTAL - my husbands old employer wanted $1000 to carry insurance over for July

$1000 a month

if I had that kind of money I would just pay for the procedures outright.. we cannot afford that at all

Are you far from Selmer op?

wewantbabiesnow · 10/07/2018 00:22

ETERNAL - I'm Australian - so I'm used to even people in fast food making over $22 per hour.. employers there don't pay minimum wage as they would be embarrassed... they pay $4-6 over.. and of course all medical is free

When you talk to Americans about medical becoming free they all get angry. I don't understand it. Life is much easier with free medical for sure :(

I don't like Australian men, I married an American and now live with him in Nashville.. but I what I miss about being back home was that even people with no education were making $70,000 and medical was free for everyone.. It's heartbreaking but America has a lot of things in common with 3rd world countries..
Apparently medical and education used to be free.. until Ronald Regan...

NEWBALLS - no. You can go into a hospital if you think you're dying and they have to treat you,

but TRUST ME you don't want to do that unless you really are dying from a gunshot or your leg is half ripped off

WITH insurance I was rear ended in California.. after 48 hours I was in terrible neck pain and went to the ER.. they did a CT of my spine, and another of my neck. Excluding the wait time, I was only in the ER for 20 minutes and the bill before insurance was $14,000

I was in the ER in November in Nashville after a dr sent me because I had blood in my urine and they were concerned about kidney failure.
I was in the ER that time for 5 hours total with IV fluids.. the bill was $11,500 before insurance

after insurance you only pay $150
but no.. I'm not going to go ask for an ultrasound (when I'm not dying, and if the baby was dying or dead there's nothing they can do to save or prevent that)
all it's going to do is probably give me another vague answer because they aren't OB's, and I'm going to come home with a $10-15,000 bill

I have no idea why americans are so against free healthcare
they have it in canada

I'm sorry you're going through this.

I don't want to belittle your miscarriage but equally I want to offer some hope that you may well not need any medical care as it sounds like the embryo stopped developing at a very early stage.

I had a couple of very early miscarriages with the same seen on the scan of yolk sac but no fetal pole. In both cases I just waited and eventually got my period, just heavier than usual but manageable at home. No D&C needed.

I think I'm right in saying that if no heartbeat or fetal pole seen that the embryo is most likely not 7 weeks but stopped developing before then?

pallisers · 10/07/2018 00:35

OP, I'm sorry for what you are going through.

I went through similar in the US years ago - blighted ovum at 12 weeks. I had one ultrasound and I doubt my insurance (which was excellent) would have authorised a second. They told me very similar news to yours (although I was spotting slightly) and i went home and waited to see if I miscarried naturally. Eventually had a D&C a week later.

I think you are focusing on the insurance - maybe - because it is too hard to focus on the possibility that this pregnancy might be at an end. I honestly don't know what you could or would do differently if you had another ultrasound. Is it the D&C you are worried about?

Have you thought about finding a planned parenthood clinic (despite what the republicans want you to think terminations are a tiny part of their service - they provide health care to women who need it)

The insurance thing is standard - you have to pay (cobra) to extend insurance between jobs. Yes the US health care system sucks.

I really do hope this works out for you.

wewantbabiesnow · 21/07/2018 03:47

some brown stuff just came out in the toilet
it's not super thick but it has some jelly like stuff in it.. very thin.. I'm not sure if this is miscarriage or not...

We will have insurance as of August 1 and I have an ultrasound scheduled for August 2 but I guess we will find out in the next 48 hours..

OP posts:
wewantbabiesnow · 21/07/2018 03:49

Planned Parenthood and other free clinics will not offer a free ultrasound to anyone who is less than 3 months (12 weeks pregnant)

it is only 8.5 weeks since my last period

OP posts:
LuvMyBubbles · 21/07/2018 03:59

I too had a blighted ovum pregnancy and several miscarriages.
I just managed at home all but one d&c.
Sorry to hear this news but you can just settle your self in the lounge hot water blanket, pillows, blankets and pain killer and ride it out. It’s just like super heavy period pain.

hibeat · 21/07/2018 04:16

It might be the beginning of miscarriage. DO not be distressed about the ultrasound, it will not treat anything. If you are having a miscarriage, unless you are haemorrhaging , your body (biologically will be fine). It is sad what is happening. It is very sad indeed. You can safely wait until august to verify that everything is gone, That would be about it. If it's miscarriage, It's time to say goodbye, don't blame yourself.
Maybe it's nothing it is frequent to have this at the beginning. Heart beat is 6 weeks ( I know that now), if there was never a heart beat, it has to go, the embryo has stop developing, it's a mass of cell but it's not a baby. If you have beliefs you will say that this little soul has already left us. This is a very frequent occurrence, and usually you are not even aware of it happening you think it's simple period. Be at peace with yourself as much as possible. A big hug, miscarriage is difficult. Do not be scared, f you have something similar to a regular period it's a good thing, it might hurt a little bit more than usual. You can feel distressed too. You can have a healthy pregnancy, it will happen.
Now maybe this little muffin is alive and well, is a little late on schedule, and he is younger than 6 week, then you're in for a surprise in august. Ok, it's unlikely, but In any case no disturbance is the best policy. We cannot truly control life, when it comes, and when it goes.

hibeat · 21/07/2018 04:20

Right now you want to see it. But believe me, you don't. Think about it. What will you see ? You are already feeling it.

Do you really want to add financial pain to emotional pain ? What you are going through right now is more than enough.

Want2bSupermum · 21/07/2018 04:32

I'm in NYC. Planned parenthood will offer you a scan of you ask them for an abortion. My friend did this to figure out if her pregnancy was viable.

Is assume you don't work. If you do work, your DH changing jobs is a qualifying event for you to sign up for health insurance with your employer.

Finally ask for the cash price for the procedure. The prices are much lower if you pay upfront. NYC it's $120 for a scan including consult. When at the doctors in central jersey the cash price for a scan was $80. Call around and I am sure you can get something for less.

Finally, do you qualify for Medicaid?

Want2bSupermum · 21/07/2018 04:34

Also if you have symptoms of a miscarriage go to your ER. Treatment is free if you aren't a legal resident. Don't give them any ID. It's an emergency so they have to treat you.

wewantbabiesnow · 27/07/2018 20:13

Hi ladies, I wrote an update somewhere else but don't know where it is so here's the short version
The whole baby came out in the toilet.. the gestational sac was the size of an avocado, but a little deflated, and I could definately see what looked like a baby inside, plus the yolk. So I guess a fetal pole did start? Unless I was seeing something else but it looked like a baby shaped head inside.

It was horrible. I had about 30 minutes of screaming pain.. and it was like how they describe contractions.. 10 seconds of unbearable screaming pain then it would ease up for a moment and restart.. that happened for 30 minutes before the baby came out in the toilet, before that I had about 2 hours of cramps that weren't quite as bad.

Seeing OB on August 2nd so will see if they say we can try again immediately. I've read a lot about women online and on youtube who conceive after miscarriage, when they ovulated, BEFORE first normal period.

9 weeks 5 days when baby came out :(

Want2bSupermum · 27/07/2018 22:41

I'm so sorry Flowers

Please go to a planned parenthood center for a check up just to make sure you are ok. If there are no centers near you an ER department will be able to help.

wewantbabiesnow · 02/08/2018 22:43

America is NOT canada, australia, or europe.. If you see an ER they won't refuse you but they WILL send you a $12,000 bill...
that's simply NOT an option

Had Ultrasound today. they did both top and vaginal and confirmed that nothing is left behind so NO D/C required. they took blood and said not to try again until the HGC levels are below 50 but preferably below 25.

I said "I've read about women getting pregnant at ovulation after miscarriage BEFORE a period" she said that's true, but it's important to wait for the hormone levels to go down first, because otherwise if you get pregnant and your levels are still up from the miscarriage, they don't know what rate your levels are increasing so it's hard to measure the new babies growth etc.. or know if you're really pregnant or if it's hormones leftover from the miscarriage.

We're praying like crazy that my levels are below 50 so we can start trying tomorrow.

Want2bSupermum · 03/08/2018 00:04

I live here. The ER are not allowed to turn you away and they are not allowed to demand you show Id for treatment. If you show up and tell them you are an illegal immigrant you don't have to pay. Here in NJ this is what those over 26 do when they don't have health insurance that covers them and they need care. It works for them.
