London Commuter town recommendations

Hi there,
Our family (husband, myself, 4 year old son, and infant daughter) will be moving to the UK in about a year when my husband is able to transfer to the Google London office. We are open to living in London, but also interested in moving to an outside town ideally no more than an hour from London. I'm a complete Anglophile and we'd love to live in a charming town, rich in history, good for young families, with good primary schools. Would love to hear anyone's recommendations on cities! Thanks!

That's in Kings Cross isn't it? In which case check where the Kings Cross and St Pancras trains come from and how long they take. How healthy is your budget? St Albans might suit?

Yes, right near King's Cross, titchy. We will be renting and our budget is healthy, though we'd love to live somewhere fairly diverse (is that possible in a smaller-than-London town?) :) Don't know much about St. Albans- will research. Thank you!

Cambridge is classic England but also relatively diverse due to the university. About 50mins to King's Cross in rush hour. Like St Albans it's pretty expensive. Hitchin is also pretty and has good schools.

I meant to say relatively diverse for its size.
