Sleepyhead Safe?

Over the past few days there have been numerous news articles stating that sleep positioners/nests are not safe. Twelve children have suffocated in the USA due to rolling over in these products.

My question is... does this include Sleepyheads? I've not found any information online. Has anyone got any information they can share?

My 10 week old baby sleeps beautifully in his sleepyhead but I didn't sleep a wink lastnight. I'm now really worried that he'll try to roll over for the first time in the middle of the night.

I think I read that the sleepyhead was still classed as safe as the material is breathable

The Sleepyheads are breathable - that's why they cost so much! 🙂

Thank you for your reply's. Can I ask have you used a Sleepyhead? If so, when did you stop using it? Knowing that the sleepyhead is breathable makes me feel better but I think once my little one can roll I'll no longer use it. I imagine I'll have a few sleepless nights getting him used to just a crib, eek! lol

I love our sleepyhead, although my 2 and a half dmonth old is officially too big for it (boooo) he's a bit unsure without it, last night was the first night and he woke up a lot. Hoping It's just a transition period. It's been well worth it though x

My 7 month old is still in his - he can roll both ways, although admittedly, the Sleepyhead makes it more difficult. We were about to buy the Grande this weekend and now I'm not sure. My little one is close to being too big for his but as he sleeps with he's knees up to his chest we've not had to stop using it yet. He's just a very long baby lol! Takes after his very tall Dad . I was planning on buying the larger version but don't think I will now. I just hope he continues to sleep through the night.

I did see on a previous thread a reply from Sleepyhead about not using the Grande until baby was 9 months old as they couldn't be sure it would be safe for a younger baby due to the higher, softer bumper. Think I will squeeze him into the deluxe for another 2 months

The NHS and Lullaby Trust guidelines say to have a firm flat mattress, ALL shaped padded things in the cot increase risk of SIDS

Thought I would post what someone has put on the other current Sleepyhead thread because I thought it made for interesting reading and has made me rethink....

I would absolutely get rid of it personally.

Have you seen how they market it in America? Same product, different name and they make it clear it's not to be used in a cot, or as a cosleeper. In a cot the risk is higher as babies have managed to roll off devices and get stuck between the bars and the cushion and suffocated. And we must remember that suffocation and SIDS aren't the same thing so that's even a separate concern.

I've been torn all night trying to decide if I should put my little one in his sleepyhead tonight. Forgetaboutsleep thank you for posting that information. I'm getting rid of it! I guess I'm in for a difficult time transitioning him to a firm mattress :-/ it's 100% worth it though.

Just a little update on how my little one's first night without the sleepyhead went. He usually sleeps through the night but woke at 3am. I was surprised at how cool he felt and had to put an extra layer on him, plus give cuddles with a thick blanket to warm him up (no hardship there for me lol.)

I now have a new worry of what to dress him in with his 2.5 tog sleepbag. I don't want him to be cold but I certainly don't want him to overheat! Our bedroom is normally between 18-19 degrees he's always been warm in just a long sleeved vest. This is also the advice given by the lullaby trust. At 3am last night I added a long sleeved cotton top, plus socks. When he woke this morning he felt warm to the touch - but not too warm.

As for the safety of the sleepyhead, now that I know it's called a dock-a-tot in America I've been able to do a bit more googling. I'll keep my sleepyhead for supervised afternoon naps,play and tummytime. Here's another link discussing the safety of the product.

Why wouldn't he be? He's long, he's almost head to toe in it. We have to have his crib next to our bed at an angle to help his relfux so I can't even open the end, he ends up just sliding down the bottom. Not sure why you're confused

I'm in complete agreement with you Holz657. I also have a very long baby who's now 11 weeks old and too big for his sleepyhead.

We have our Chicco Next to Me at an angle and if we open our sleepyhead our little one slides out of it.

It's difficult isn't it! He's just slides right out poor thing haha. It's a shame because if I opened the bottom he would get a while more in it but no chance with it being angled x

Also how is your little one getting on? Our first night without sleepyhead was the same, he never wakes but he woke at 3am and felt cool. Our room is usually about 19-21 degrees. Struggling to find the balance between too hot and too cold x

Aw I'm having a nightmare trying to keep him at the right temperature! Even when he's asleep I'm lay worrying that he could be cold or overheating! lol We're still dressing him in a long sleeved vest, long sleeved cotton top and socks with a 2.5 tog sleepbag. How are you getting on without the sleepyhead? I can't say I've had a good nights sleep since we've stopped using it. I've not been this tired for quite sometime! My 10 hour sleeper is now down to 6 hours (if I'm very lucky) and is noisily twirling around in his crib throughout the night. I'm seeing every hour on the clock and feel like a walking zombie, I've never eaten so much junk food!

On a positive note I now have the sleepyhead in my living room with the mobile attached and my little one absolutely loves playing with it! It also great for tummytime, I have him leaning over the edge and he loves the elevated view lol.

Aw I'm the exact same!! He's always been a good sleeper but the nights he's been out sleepyhead it's not been great! Hopefully they just take a bit of time and will go back to sleeping good. It's been a godsend but I didn't think it would be this hard taking it away!

Yeah I've got the sleepyhead in the living room! Not ready to put it away for good yet haha!

Instead of sleepyhead could you just use a Moses basket a bit longer and put this in cot to shrink the sleep environment? Then transition to small cot (like a zipped up next to me one? We went back to this when my very long lo outgrew his pram top that he used to sleep in but couldn't manage a big scary cot. Sleepyheads are stupidly expensive and tiny, I also wonder how good they are developmentally, surely being able to roll around and move their arms around is a more normal environment? My 3 month old wouldn't have fitted a sleepyhead (but he's 98th percentile) worth bearing in mind before paying for one.

We had a sleepy head for my now 21/2 year old, it was the best thing we brought for him. He loved the reassurance of the soft surroundings. Definitely going to use it for baby #2!!!
