I came across this petition on social media today that wants to ban non stunned halal meat in the UK. Animals that have been stunned before being slaughtered isn’t technically halal from my understanding.

What are your thoughts on this and do you think anything will come out from this?

Petition: Ban non-stun slaughter in the UK

In modern society, we believe more consideration needs to be given to animal welfare and how livestock is treated and culled. We believe non-stun slaughter is barbaric and doesn't fit in with our culture and modern-day values and should be banned, as...

They can't ban it. We have a friend who works in the Abattoirs across Wales most of the workers are Muslim. Most of that meat goes to super markets. They all say Bismillah before slaughter. Stunned or none atunned abattoirs.

They tries to "ban" it 9 years ago. Nothing happened. As they sais the biggest consunera of Red meat are....... muslims. More specific Pakistanis. So yeah good luck with that. They will make massive loss as everyone will juat boycott.

Here is a great link on why stunning is Harram aaaaand has a bad effect on the animals.

We got our Aqiqah and Qurbani from here. You can pick the sheep and watch the slaughter and processing. Very ethical, professional and clean. Fantastic service. We are satiafied with the animals welfare under sharia. No torture, no stress etc.

I think there's a wider issue here as to what really constitutes halal in these times of intensive factory farming. All the animals are herded into a dark room like a conveyor belt and slaughtered in front of each other. They live a short, squalid existence with no quality of life, fed on unhealthy food designed only to make them put on weight quickly.

I'm talking about all meat here, not halal specifically. But I'd like to see Muslims show more concern for the entire process, not just whether it has a halal sticker on it. We should be leading on matters to do with animal welfare and care of the environment.

Are they also banning kosher?

It ought to banned alongside halal.
We have a long history here of steadily improving animal welfare, this includes stunning animals prior to being killed. Two issues are taking us back to worsening welfare of animals; factory farming and the very widespread adoption of Halal slaughter. As a vegetarian for six decades I find this very upsetting, to say the least. Religious slaughter of animals goes against the grain, why subject them to additional trauma? I don't understand the need.

Another point is that Halal meat is flying under the radar, most is NOT labelled as such, it's only discernable by looking up the code on the package (Lists are found on Google) something most people either don't know or can't manage while peering at the meat counter in Tesco's.
It's widespread use by institutions such as schools, NHS and more I see as an easy cop-out by authorities. Recoverable stun is another cop-out and a fudge, and in my opinion is worse than not stunning at all. It's not what should be happening in a modern country.
