Assalamu alaikum

I hope insha'Allah Ramadan is going well for you all.

We have an uncle in the US who has become ill and unable to provide for his wife and child at this moment. Do any of you lovely Mumsnetters know if it would be ok to give him zakat as he has fallen on hard times? He owns his home, however he has no income now and the insurance will not pay for the rest of his recovery.

Wa'alaykumus Salam, i'm not sure if he will be liable for zakat if he has other zakatable assets that reach the minimum threshold such as gold, savings, stocks and shares etc.

I think it would be best to contact a local mufti if possible who would be able to give you a definite answer.

May Allah grant your uncle a full recovery Ameen.

Wa Alaykoum Asalam sis.
I would advise him to contact Huda TV when they do Ask Huda he can speak to Sheikh Muhammed Salah or Sheikh Assim Al Hakeem.
Tricky situation. Allah grant him Shifa Ameen.

Is there a reason his wife can not work? Any job? Cleaning? Store work etc.

Thank you for your replies sisters I think as it is not straightforward we will give our Zakat as normal, then contribute what we can to him as we do not want to make a mistake.

His wife will need to care for him for the foreseeable future, as he had a stroke and is unable to use half of his body.
