After yesterday’s horrific attack in Southport, the usual Islamophobia and racism has jumped up as per usual. Whilst there is no indication the suspect was Muslim and the police have confirmed it’s not terror related, the speculation and accusations on social media were rife, with many still claiming it’s why Islam should be banned in the UK and we should all be sent back.

And that is tough, because the sadness over what happened is magnified by fears for our safety and our future. So just thinking of you all and wanted to say hope you’re ok.

My mum used to tell us as kids that there'd be a time when the world would be fighting against Islam and it would be hated. I never understood it as a kid but I can absolutely see it now.

I'm not Muslim, but if I may I would like to stand with in solidarity. These riots do not come close to being part of British Values or a reflection of a Britain I ever want to be apart of. Diversity, peace and unity xx Stay safe and those responsible I hope are brought to (lengthy) justice.

So I was really worried about the riots especially with family in some areas that were going to be targeted etc etc on the phone all day all! However turns out nothing happened not sure if its fake news or people trying to stir things up or if they thought just by saying something people would stay home etc etc if anyone did turn up not sure but nothing happened and everyone got on with daily life there so I'm starting to think maybe the media is whipping up more because if people think we are divided etc more easier to conquer! Obviously be careful and sensible as I always tell my family and friends no matter who or where be aware of your surroundings and be sensible and safe. On a positive note did anyone see 10k people turned up in solidarity unity over in London. Had white friends offering to walk to work or shopping so women in the family not walking alone etc so many wonderful people out there. I really hope the poster who is having panic attacks has decent neighbours. Most people are decent. Don't let the minority get you down. (I also have my low days, stay off the msm news channels!)

Hey ladies just a heads up - be careful when sharing Instagram links as it sometimes will tell whoever opens it who has shared it and will give your identity away. It just happened to a poster when I opened their instagram link. Luckily I messaged them before many could view it.

I’m obviously white but married into a south Asian family and honestly the abuse they received on the streets when my wider family flew in after Covid was awful! ( they were blamed for it 🤦‍♀️) stay strong ladies, any updates about riots in your area or have the chavs finally ducked off??

I'm up in Scotland, so probably the neds (our tracksuited fortified-wine-drinkers) will deal with them for us. 👍 Things south of the border look to have been much worse. We just had a few folk outside a mosque that got invited in for tea, and two blokes with England flags who looked uncomfortable then went to the pub.

That has made me chuckle more than it should have sorry! got invited in for tea, it looked suspicious and uncomfortable so went for a pint instead! Bet they’re from Derby!!!!!!!

Really? We’re heading up next week and had thought Scotland had been saved! Lol to the England flags, if it was DH’s home town they wouldn’t have lasted long wandering around with them.

We've not had to change anything of what we do, really. Most of the chat about it has been to offer support and reassurance to us, which has been really positive. People have cared far more about the new football season! I think the big test will be the planned 'pro-UK' event in early September.

@Millie1501 there are indeed several reasons people might feel unsafe in the aftermath of this tragedy - I know I felt a bit of anxiety dropping my DC off at their nursery. We try so hard to keep our children safe, and knowing how fragile that safety can be is scary.

I don't think it's unreasonable to have a thread in the Muslim Mumsnetters section, discussing how we as Muslims feel unsafe in the context of the riots which have explicitly targeted Muslims as well as other minority groups, any more than it would be unreasonable to have a thread in a Parenting section about feeling worried for children's safety in the aftermath of this, or to have a thread in a board for another minority group discussing how people from that group might have concerns about their own safety.

Personally, this thread has been a source of comfort - it has meant a lot to see messages of support.

@Millie1501 perhaps it might be more appropriate and respectful of other people's feelings and experiences to have those discussions in a place other than a thread expressing support and comfort for Muslim women, in the Muslim Mumsnetters section of the website. I'm sure if you start a separate thread, perhaps in a more appropriate board, people will contribute, but it doesn't feel at all compassionate or respectful to try to do that here. The idea of this board is to be a safer space for Muslim women, just as there are other separate boards for other groups. Please respect that.

@Scirocco Everything I have said is correct and isn’t in any way meant to be disrespectful, it’s just facts that need addressing. The specific thread you chose is not relevant to what you are saying, it is still one sided and biased. In fact why do we all need separate threads, again part of the issue.

Once again I don’t agree with any violence from ANY group for ANY reason. But all of it needs to be discussed from ALL sides. That’s the only to fix these problems.
