After yesterday’s horrific attack in Southport, the usual Islamophobia and racism has jumped up as per usual. Whilst there is no indication the suspect was Muslim and the police have confirmed it’s not terror related, the speculation and accusations on social media were rife, with many still claiming it’s why Islam should be banned in the UK and we should all be sent back.

And that is tough, because the sadness over what happened is magnified by fears for our safety and our future. So just thinking of you all and wanted to say hope you’re ok.

I’m travelling back to North East and have to change trains twice.

I feel sick with worry, I’ve been up for hours, I plan to lock myself in my house when I get back and not leave till things calm down.
Cancelling my hospital appointments as they are in Durham city centre hospital and I’ll feel too scared to go.

Trying to not keep mentioning my fears to my daughters as I don’t want them as scared as me.

Awe I don't think you should cancel hospital appointments, any chance you can reach out to people who might be able to accompany you to your appointments? There have been some lovely ladies offering to accompany ladies who need support up and down the country. I've seen so many women offering to travel with any lady to help them get to work or appointments or even getting their shopping in. Mostly FB groups. Some lovely human beings out there. Please reach out to your local area. Time to make connections with good human beings.

Durham constabulary have reported protests happening here today and tomorrow even in the little towns around me and this one.

Why am I subjected to this madness, reading the Middlesbrough family having their door kicked in terrifies me.

meisafairy · 06/08/2024 15:45

The riots have started in Durham and bishop Auckland seems to have closed all shops heading this way I’m terrified
I’ve asked my children to go elsewhere but they won’t leave.
i truly wish I wasn’t alive, the fear of knowing our door can be kicked in because I’m brown terrified me

I'm so sorry @meisafairy. It must be terrifying. Do you live in a city centre? Hopefully the rioters won't come anywhere near where you are.

meisafairy · 06/08/2024 16:50

No I live in a very small town 5 miles from Durham, they have closed all shops nearby ready for it, I’m one of very few Asian people here so I’m a sitting duck, my daughters won’t leave I’ve told them too head down south but they won’t leave.
panic attack after panic attack, I can’t do this, fear of my door being kicked in being attacked my kids or little dogs being hurt.
All because even though I was born here that doesn’t matter, it’s because I’m brown.
I truly wish my stroke had killed mr last year as the very real thought of my kids being hurt destroys me.
Im so scared.
Its literally a mile from me, there is no immigration hotel or stuff like that here so no idea who their targets will be

meisafairy · 06/08/2024 16:54

It’s insane to people are posting about beer gardens and trivial things and I’m fearing for our safety
need to calm myself down

Scirocco · 06/08/2024 18:08

Do you have any neighbours you could ask for help and support? I would do anything I could to help if a neighbour was afraid for their safety.

You could also contact your local police station and advise them that you're vulnerable with mobility issues. Ask them what they suggest or if they have any systems to prioritise responses to addresses of vulnerable residents in the community.

Hopefully, a small town with few Asian residents won’t be targeted. Most people are horrified by the behaviour of these racist thugs. It will hopefully be the case that your neighbours and other residents will feel protective of you. I live in Washington, just up from Chester-le-Street. Where are you?

I’m in Spennymoor on the outskirts.

I’m in Spennymoor on the outskirts.

I used to work in Spennymoor and Ferryhill (admittedly years ago now). It used to be a good community. If it’s still full of mostly decent people, I doubt (and hope) you won’t need to worry. The riots (and gangs of idiots) are in large town and cities. Spennymoor is too small for them to gather. How are your immediate neighbours? Could you tell them you are feeling afraid?

TakeMe2Insanity · 06/08/2024 23:16

I’m glad you got home safely. Try and talk to someone local to you, just even to go for a walk to help calm yourself down or a cup of tea.

Tbh I’m surprised this is still continuing. Apparently they are targeting immigration solicitors tomorrow. The government needs to shut this down asap. This is terrorism and they should be treated like terrorists.

Ineedwinenow · 06/08/2024 23:29

I’ve just heard on another thread riots are planned for Derby ( I have no idea if this list is true ) but if the riots do come and any of you feel scared or threatened just drop me a PM and I’ll come and meet you.

I can’t believe that Derby has riots planned, I’m feeling very let down about my city and some of the thugs in it, it’s a great diverse city so I hope they all get arrested and sent to prison, I’m standing with you all, your all in my thoughts ( and all of you throughout the UK)

Scirocco · 07/08/2024 07:14

Stay safe @Ineedwinenow . Derby is a great city - I used to visit quite regularly pre- small children. So sad to see these riots spreading like fungus across our country.

anotherlevel · 07/08/2024 09:17

I'm not sure where to put this without starting a new thread. But there's been a list of targeted places for the riots doing the rounds on WhatsApp.

Please stay safe and away from these areas.

There are reports of loads of racist marches today at 8:00. I suggest you check the list and keep away

30 new rallies on police radar and lawyers' offices threatened, sources say
There are 30 gatherings planned tomorrow, police sources have told Sky News.

Wednesday is expected to be a big day, with lawyers' offices potentially being targeted, Sky News understands.

Some 30% of trained riot cops are mobilised (6,000 officers), with sources saying police are better prepared than last week.

Police chiefs believe there will be another day or two of disorder, but that they have seen the worst of it. Nonetheless, they are ready if unrest escalates.

It is worth noting that not all protests said to be planned last week actually went ahead.

Sources say the number of arrests has now surpassed 400.

Charges were brought against 46 suspects yesterday and 18 more overnight.

Counter-terrorism police are investigating potential terror crimes. Dear all,

Following the tragic events in Southport last week and the subsequent violent disorder we have seen across the country, I wanted to provide you with an update on our policing approach within Surrey.

While at this stage, in Surrey, we have not seen the levels of disorder, protests, or reports of hate crime that have been seen across other parts of the country, I understand that this has still caused concerns within our local communities. I want to reassure you that we have officers working across the county to help keep you safe.

Since we first saw the increase in violent disorder across the country and where specific communities have been targeted, our local officers have increased their visibility and engagement where we know that residents, businesses, and faith leaders are feeling vulnerable. We want to ensure that we can best support and provide any reassurance possible to you and to our communities who may be concerned for their safety.

We have also increased our patrols in key areas across the county so that our communities have a visible presence from us. Please encourage your communities to speak to our officers if they have any questions, or to report any crimes to us through the usual channels. In an emergency, always dial 999.

As you may already be aware, last night there was a large police presence in Woking following reports circulating on social media of possible disorder in the area. Officers were on scene within minutes of the first call being received. While we did not see any disorder, we maintained a strong policing presence in the area yesterday evening to provide support and reassurance. These patrols will continue throughout the rest of the week to help to keep people safe and reassure those who were concerned.

Local teams will be continuing to work closely with you to ensure you have the support you need from us over the coming weeks. Should we experience the levels of disorder that have been seen elsewhere in the country, we will continue to keep you updated on our response and the actions we are taking.

I am aware that there have been a small number of incidents either in our county, or close to our borders, and would like to reassure you that we are continually monitoring the situation and the information we are receiving to respond to this. We will continue to facilitate peaceful protect, but criminal activity will not be tolerated, and we will respond robustly.

Our priority throughout is ensuring that our communities feel safe and supported by us. If you would like to discuss anything mentioned above, or have any concerns, please contact your local Borough Commander, who will share this with me.

Yes it’s truly shocking, I think Derby is a great city and I’m proud it’s my local city but I’m ashamed and now feel let down by some of its residents today, thank you for wishing me well but as a white woman I’ve never had the same experiences as you all have had on this thread and my heart breaks for you, this shouldn’t be a thing in todays world.

The only saving grace to all this is that everyone coming together on this thread (and to be honest your safe space) to wish you all well and standing by you all, but as I said up thread if any of you in Derby or surroundings areas needs support from a white woman ( I can’t even believe I have to type that 🤯🤬) just drop me a message and I’ll come straight over.

Please can you all come back to this thread after the riots have been in your area to let us know how your all doing, stay safe, I’m checking this thread several times a day 💔

TakeMe2Insanity · 07/08/2024 10:54

The comments on the other threads have been horrible. Questioning why you wouldn’t go somewhere. Yes carry on as normal but don’t question those who are being targeted to keep themselves and their families safe.

There’s been a lot of discussion about people coming out in groups to protect buildings/mosques the reality is no one wants to come out and face the far right but we’ve seen what happens when no one comes out - they literally run riot. Our parents came here, we were born here, we sadly have to stand up for ourselves because no one else will.

TakeMe2Insanity · 07/08/2024 12:57

I agree @anotherlevel we have no choice. We’ve seen what happens if we hide inside the house, they run through the streets and kick the door in and chuck stones at the windows.

The issue is HOW to defend ourselves.

Theres been a lot in the news today trying to humanise the protestors (far right militant thugs) saying people are making fun if their teeth (they haven’t had dental care), their fat (they don’t have good food) etc etc but that doesn’t mean you start beating and attempting to kill people. You do what the bulk of our parents (on the assumption your parents weren’t born here) did, you educated yourselves, you educate your children and pull yourself out. You make sacrifices for your kids.
