Songs are just like books or films. Portray a scenario. Not necessarily a recommendation for living - just the reflection of an experience.

FFS that's exactly the kind of lazy cop-out I'm talking about. I don't think the song's likely to turn anyone into a wife beater, but I certainly think it normalises DV. And while songs might portray, rather than advocate a particular lifestyle choice, I think that the line 'A kiss with a fist is better than none' is stating a pretty clear preference. The clue is in the phrase 'is better'. A (dreary, mawkish) Tori Amos song might portray getting raped, but I don't think anyone listening would imagine that it's recommending it.

I dunno, song lyrics are a mystery to me. Don't think I have accurately interpreted a song yet. So I suppose that song lyrics mean whatever you interpret them as meaning. I always assume that songs are on some level I am yet to understand . Plus I have actually known some women for which the literal lyrics for this song are true. Very and I suppose Florence at al, may be describing rather than making a judgement.
