Kayzr · 21/05/2009 13:20

Mine are:

Mum: Duran Duran(who I love), Gary Numan and the bay city rollers.

Dad: Mainly Queen. His music is mainly rubbish

Worldsworstmummy · 21/05/2009 13:24

Nana Mouskouri.

MadameCastafiore · 21/05/2009 13:24

My father (or poor excuse for one) had a Helen Ready (sp?) record (CDs weren't out when I were young!) and he played it over and over - Pearl's a Singer, I am a Woman, Ain't no Way to Treat a Lady, ooohhhh they were proper songs!

MayorNaze · 21/05/2009 13:46

and CHRIS DE BURGH!!! oh yes, i know all the words to patricia the stripper, me

SallyJayGorce · 21/05/2009 13:55

Roger Whittaker (He was constantly Leavin' Old Durham Town)

Odd Chinese pianists playing stuff called 'Full Moon over the Lotus Chamber' and 'Glitter Eyes' etc

Echoes of Gold - pop flute

Sentimental 'best of' arias from Madame Butterfly etc

Ravi Shankar sitar music

Old time Music Hall

Roy Castle - Songs for a Rainy Day
Jack Jones - 'A Jack Jones Christmas'

Bullfight music

But ones I love still are:

From Dad - Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony, Willie Nelson, Lena Horne, Eydie Gorme, Peggy Lee, Julie London, John Denver

From Mum - The Seekers, Judy Collins, Helen Reddy, Frank Sinatra, Glenn Millar, Trini Lopez, Peter Paul and Mary, the soundtrack to A Chorus Line, Simon and Garfunkel, The Carpenters, The Mamas and the Papas, Scottish folk, Dixieland Jazz, Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Waller, Eddie Condon, Barbra Streisand, The Beatles and Macy Gray (a late addition)

SallyJayGorce · 21/05/2009 13:58

OOH - and LOADS of Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong and Peter Sellers (DAD) and Billie Holiday and Joan Baez (MUM). And the 'wahbadabada' theme from 'Un Homme et une Femme' - a regular lullaby.

My mum ironing & singing along to Neil Diamond or Dolly Parton.

feralgirl · 21/05/2009 17:00

Golden Brown by The Stranglers. For years I thought the words were

"Golden brown,
Test your lights son"

A whispered confession: I don't like Simon and Garfunkel! >
It's my parent's fault, it was horribly overplayed on Sunday mornings.

Thunderduck · 21/05/2009 17:13

ELO and The Move. Blame my father for that.

My favourite song as a young child was Fire Brigade by The Move.
I still have a fondness for it and ELO.

My parents certainly aren't responsible for my love of rock, metal and classical music. I've no idea where those came from.

snigger · 21/05/2009 17:16

Oh, The Move!!

Did they do Night Of Fear?

That was my Dad's bestest, that was.

mollyroger · 21/05/2009 17:33

Mayornaze - ''and with a swing of her hips, she started to strip, to tremendous applause, she took off her drawers and with a lick of her lips, she undid ALL her clips...threw it all in the air and everyone stared and as the last peice of clothing fell to the floor the police were knocking at the door...''

OMG! I had forgotton all about that! My mum played that to death too
Put it this way, those lyrics are totally from memory....

sally wow, your parents' taste was almost as eclectic as my parents. That is quite a wide-ranging selection, isn't it?

That was their debut single I believe.

LyraSilvertongue · 21/05/2009 21:55

Manfred Mann. My mum listened to them constantly when I was off school for a week with measles.

Wizzska · 22/05/2009 10:35

Mine are my older brother's prog rock albums. He used to listen to Yes all the time, and the album cover for Nursery Crimes by Genesis is etched onto my memory. I was fascinated by it as a kid. I also remember constantly hearing him trying to perfect the riff for Leyla on his electric guitar. Whenever I hear any of that music it always takes me back to the 70s and early 80s, very evocative.
