Sunshinemummy · 21/05/2009 10:47

Bobby Darin - my dad is obsessed.

MrsMattie · 21/05/2009 10:48

My mum was a right old hippy. Dory Previn and lots of weirdy world music in our house. I still love Nana Miskouri (sp?)

cestlavie · 21/05/2009 10:59

Oh, Country and Western. Loads of it. Not just Dolly Parton, Glenn Campbell and Johnny Cash, not even just Boxcar Willie, Kenny Rogers and Hank Williams but also the really obscure stuff like Johnny Horton.

Friends are always stunned at my in depth knowledge of this genre...!

MrsMattie · 21/05/2009 11:02

Yes, we had a fair bit of country, too (my dad's influence). And endless Irish music. Surely I am not the only MN-er who grew up with Irish music blaring in the house all the time (embarrassing me in front of my friends when we just wanted to listen to some pop music in peace )

MrsMattie · 21/05/2009 11:03

Oh, and were all 80s children reared on Paul Simon's Graceland?

PatTheHammer · 21/05/2009 11:04

DD (3) just loved Captain Beaky! Cheers harley! Just worked out I was 1 when it came out

daftpunk · 21/05/2009 11:09

mack the knife....i'm clicking my fingers here..

SoupDragon · 21/05/2009 11:12

John Denver, Neil Diamond, stuff like Steeleye Span...

I lost any cool points once by driving with my car stereo turned up really loud singing along to John Denver singing "Aye Calypso". Oh but it felt so good!

RubyBlueberry · 21/05/2009 11:15

Ooh, great thread, yes we grew up in the 80's!!

My Dad loves AKER bloody BILK so imagine growing up to "stranger on the shore" - he even bought me a clarinet so I could play it for him

My Mam is way cooler, she liked the Stones, Queen, S&G, Steeleye Span, Maddy Prior, Animals and then spoils it all by also liking Phil Collins and Chris de Burgh

(hence my liking for very loud music like Metallica etc, though NOT good for singing along to in the car...)

mollyroger · 21/05/2009 11:44

can't help womdering what our dc will be saying out about their musical upbringign in around 3o years' time...

expect Simon and Garfunkel will stillbe mentioned

GrapefruitMoon · 21/05/2009 11:47

Glen Miller, Elvis

bluebump · 21/05/2009 11:51

My mum loved Bruce Springsteen and things like UB40 and Simply Red. My dad had better taste, he was into the Beatles and Pink Floyd etc. Actually when I was growing up and was into Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins etc my dad always used to take copies of all of the albums so I still think he had better taste than my mum

leothelioness · 21/05/2009 11:57

Elvis, the beatles and abba. I remember thinking 'so not cool' when I was younger now it seem to have grown on me.

EightiesChick · 21/05/2009 12:46

Another one for Neil Diamond here - it's my dad who's the big fan, though my mum also likes him. Me and DH bought them tickets for the last tour, as they had said it was too expensive, and they were thrilled. Am now thinking I should have gone myself too! The live show is supposed to be great.

Also, Sinatra. Another of my dad's things that I've grown into as I've got older.

I do also remember my dad playing 'Mull of Kintyre' and 'Sailing' repeatedly when i was young - I do like Rod Stewart but thankfully haven't developed a fixation on either of those tracks.

My FIL is a Dylan obsessive and after scorning it in his youth, when he was into more of-the-moment music, DH has gone the same way.

Ponymum · 21/05/2009 13:01

mollyroger did you know that The Killers have done an awesome cover of Dires Straights' Romeo and Juliet? It would seriously stop you in your tracks and make you cry (well, it did for me - it IS a great song!).

Also weird coincidence, my DH just bought the CD of War of the Worlds this week and has been playing it to us in the car... spooky!

For me... my Dad had an LP of Crosby Stills Nash and Young, the one with Our House and Teach Your Children Well etc. He never played it but we would always dig it out of the cupboard and put it on the turntable (aren't they now called decks - see, I am 'with it' ). I still love: I light the fire, while you place the flowers in the vase that you bought today.... ahh

mollyroger · 21/05/2009 13:04

I will go search when i get home

crosby Young Stills and nash rock! Love that 'our house' track too. We play it when slightly pished and feeling all is well with our world |(even though we are stressed and skint )

Mum: Meatloaf (Bat Out of Hell era). And Abba.

Dad: Loads of different stuff including, of course, Simon and Garfunkel, plus various obscure old blues singers. And old ska stuff. And Jimi Hendrix (me and my brother used to rock out to dad's 'Hey Joe' 7-inch when we were tiny, thinking it was the most hilarious thing in the world). And Dolly Parton. And a load of folky bollocks which I have no affection for at all.
