I think I heard her being played in a shop today (we asked what cd was playing but I forgot her name and am pretty sure it must've been NM) Had a listen to a few samples on iTunes and you tube

Wasn't she in 10,000 maniacs and once did a duet with the wonderful Mr Stipe?

Or maybe I dreamt this.

MaryAnnSingleton · 24/02/2009 21:57

you might be right - I know nothing and am just guessing she was who I was listening to !

yes natalie merchant was the singer in 10,000 maniacs. wonderful voice. ah, takes me back to my goth (ish) days, floating around in a black dress trying to look mournful.
"there's a shiver in my bones just thinking
about the weather" love it!!

MaryAnnSingleton · 24/02/2009 22:04

hmm, will investigate further

Looooooooooove her. Do you have any of the words?

Stinkyfeet · 24/02/2009 22:07

I've had In My Tribe in the car over the last few weeks - it's so good - I hadn't listened to it for years, so it's been like discovering it all over again! My fave is Don't Talk.

Racers · 24/02/2009 22:09

One of my fave bands (till nm left). Not as strong as solo artist but still very good. Has worked with stipe (rem also fave band) on Photograph and Campfire Song (in my tribe). Maybe others? If you like pre-Out of time REM stuff, definately worth a listen.

Prosecco · 24/02/2009 22:10

I love this too, and the one about not being able to read.

Racers · 24/02/2009 22:18

I love her lyrics soooooo much!

"all these lines and circles - to me, a mystery
Eve, pull down the apple, and give a taste to me
If you could it would be wonderful. But my pride is in the way. I cannot read to save my life. I'm so ashamed to say"
And all to quite a perky tune

FriarKewcumber · 24/02/2009 22:20

oooh 10,0000 Maniacs - feel the urge to go dust off my old LP's

Racers · 24/02/2009 22:20

Dd2 was born to circle dream and sort of named after her.. a bit. Obsessed, moi?!

FriarKewcumber · 24/02/2009 22:21

FriarKewcumber · 24/02/2009 22:26

Racers · 24/02/2009 22:27

Hotcrossbunny · 24/02/2009 22:38

10,000 Maniacs! I listened to them constantly, probably 1990ish??? Along with Indigo Girls.

Both CD's were in my birth bag - sadly never made it out, but I must play them to dd and see if she 'remembers' them from the womb Oh and the soundtrack to Moulin Rouge

FriarKewcumber · 24/02/2009 22:40

Will look at those links in the morning, thanks - look forward to them

Reminds me of my carefree student life

Stinkyfeet · 24/02/2009 23:39

moondog · 24/02/2009 23:44

paddingtonbear1 · 24/02/2009 23:48

she has a lovely voice - I have one of her CDs, bought a few years ago, after someone I knew played it. I;d never heard of her before then!

Stinkyfeet · 25/02/2009 00:13

What's the Matter Here

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 25/02/2009 00:18

i remember one of my friends happily singing whats the matter here (just that line) and humming along a bit as she had heard it from my room. Being an overserious english student i made her sit down and listen to the lyrics and understand what the song was all about. she cried. and didn't sing for weeks. oops.

Stinkyfeet · 25/02/2009 00:24

Ouch, Toomuch! She'd have been better off singing Sister Rose - a bit more frivolous!
