I saw Catatonia in the Water Rats pub in King's Cross, circa 1994, in the middle of the bill (if memory serves, some long-forgotten band called Octopus were headlining). They weren't very good.

Also saw The Darkness at the Camden Barfly before they took off. They weren't very good either!

spice girls they did one song at a smash hits poll winners party thing as a new band (one of their first gigs apparently)

I went to see Duran Duran at Wembley Arena about 4 or 5 yrs ago. I was feeling ill so decided to skip the support act. I soooo wish I hadn't now as it was Scissor Sisters!

madcol · 09/06/2008 22:24

Saw keane when they were first a support act for coldplay. They were better than coldplay - well less monotonous - even then.

There's a free festival in my nearest town every year called Beached and it's gaining quite a reputation for putting bands on just as they are becoming successful. I saw the Fratellis there the week their first single charted and The Hoosiers were there last year. It's a good weekend, the organisers all have kids, so it's very kid-friendly. (and it's on the beach!)

Kylie Minogue...happened to visit her record company with my dad in the late 80s, don't think it was going well, she had been crying and looked blotchy.

ghosty · 09/06/2008 22:34

I taught Newton Faulkner when he was 11. Does that count?

Sputnik · 09/06/2008 22:35

Supporting Bauhaus c.1982, an obscure goth band caled Batcave.
It was fronted by Nick Cave.

Used to see the Levellers in Brighton when they were on their way up. Always a good night out.

phatcat · 09/06/2008 22:35

James supporting the Smiths in Bradford, around the time of the Smiths first TOTP appearance; Sugarcubes (Bjork); I turned down the opp to see Madonna's first UK gig at the Hacienda - doh! Spam - thanks for the link to Beached, we recently moved to Harrogate so may well check that out.

ImPinkThereforeImSpam · 09/06/2008 22:40

On behalf of my Mum, I'm going to trump you all! There was a nightclub in my home town called the Penthouse which she went to every friday night. She saw most of the bands on this list! (I saw The Enid! I was 11!)

bonkerz · 09/06/2008 22:44

I saw Martine McCucheon (sp?) when she was in a dodgy girl group and was supporting ant and dec on tour!

Heathcliffscathy · 09/06/2008 22:46

God i feel old

serenity · 09/06/2008 23:14

Feeder supporting a rather excellent band called The Family Cat in Islington quite a few years before they got famous. They were absolutely godawful at the time, but obviously learnt to write songs and play their instruments in the interum, as I think they're pretty good now

Also saw Sugarcubes live (and therefore Bjork), I prefer the band to her solo stuff though (I heart Einer)

Carmenere · 09/06/2008 23:17

What is the band that Courtney Loves dead husband was in? I saw them.

Ecmo · 09/06/2008 23:19

Carter the unstoppable sex machine

I'd never heard of them
Have now heard of them twice
