I watched the Netflix documentary on Avicii last night. I didn’t know much about him but of course I recognised his dance music.

What a talented man and how sad the way things turned out for him.

So sad that he was so pressured by the record company to write his music in a way that didn’t feel authentic to him.

Surely no one interferes with the ideas of artists making other art forms, so why do people think they can interfere with the work of musicians? So sad.

Oh but 'they' do, 'they' do. I accept it's not as obvious in other artistic areas and the pressures maybe a little more subtle, but there is pressure to conform, 'break the mould', please the audience etc etc. It's a dilemma everyone who works as an artist faces at some point and to some degree - do you please the paying public or do you please yourself.

I agree the way Avicii was treated was very sad.

Yes, I can understand that as an artist you’d want to be mindful of what speaks to your audience, but why do the executives have to involve themselves so heavily?

I just think it’s arrogant and damaging to the artist and their creativity. Such a shame that Avicii’s ideas for his music weren’t allowed to flourish. I bet they would have been beautiful and progressive and connected to the current trends in a way that he wanted them to be.

why do executives get involved - just one answer - the money. Pure & simple.
