Amy Rigby, Don't Ever Change - well, it's not actually about a baby but one verse is about a rapidly growing up daughter, perhaps early teens or slightly younger at the time. But it's very touching song about motherhood.

Little Green. written by Joni Mitchell for the daughter she had to give up for adoption. (they've since been reunited)

I know lots of people hate country, but you did say ANY genre so I'm recommending 'For baby (for bobbie)' by John Denver which was written I think for his daughter and the words are just so apt - I can't listen to it without crying

This is a lovely idea btw, good luck with it

Charmed Life by The Divine Comedy.

Written about his DD. Makes me cry its so lovely.

Hi Bumbly,

Wonderful Baby - Don Maclean. Can't find the original version on youtube but if you don't know the song here is quite a sweet family doing a version of it.

How is your lovely DS doing Bumbly?

margoandjerry · 04/06/2008 21:47

don singing with random but cute baby video

margoandjerry · 04/06/2008 21:49

and this one St Judy's Comet - Paul Simon wrote it for his baby son and I often sing it for my DD.

Watching that video is making me broody now

mufti · 04/06/2008 21:50

Pruners, me too. I grew up with that album because my dad had it and played it all the time. Take me to the Mardi Gras just makes me go funny it's so good.

for you. Is he a Captain Beefheart/Joy Division type person? Because they spontaneously combust when Paul Simon is played but that's because their ears are broken

mufti · 05/06/2008 11:36

hey margo , i used to like joy division, but i prefer paul simon now

MrsJamin · 06/06/2008 09:31

What a lovely idea - have just rooted out several of these from my iTunes. I always sing "You are my sunshine" to my DS every night - I don't know whether there's a decent recording of that? I have one by Ray Charles but it's not the original melody and it's to a 'girl'.

hattyyellow · 06/06/2008 09:46

Nick Cave - Into my arms? Depends on her religious views perhaps!

I remember dancing with my babies to this and am welling up again just reading the lyrics

"I don't believe in an interventionist god
But I know, darling, that you do
But if I did I would kneel down and ask him
Not to intervene when it came to you
Not to touch a hair on your head
To leave you as you are
And if he felt he had to direct you
Then direct you into my arms"

Or Nick Drake - Northern Sky? Always seemed very applicable to new babies to me..

"I never felt magic crazy as this
I never saw moons knew the meaning of the sea
I never held emotion in the palm of my hand
Or felt sweet breezes in the top of a tree
But now you?re here
Brighten my northern sky

I?ve been a long time that I?m waiting
Been a long time that I?m blown
I?ve been a long time that I?ve wandered
Through the people I have known
Oh, if you would and you could
Straighten my new mind?s eye"
