Singer was awful. I switched it off and watched iron maiden instead. Lnotp seems different
these days. Made for bbc tv.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 14/09/2025 09:46

which singer in particular?

@Nitgel - in what way did you think he was ‘awful’? I find that hard to comprehend. Maybe not to your taste, but a highly trained professional giving a note-perfect and very skilled performance.

The opening quartet didn’t quite work. Tuning was off for the first half of it. Otherwise, I was blown away by the whole thing.

Clearinguptheclutter · 14/09/2025 09:48

I absolutely loved it! Sir Brian messed up momentarily

I also loved the conductor and her outfit

I love bill bailey but his timing wasn’t quite right

TelephoneWires · 14/09/2025 09:49

Yes it was - I cried especially with the news right now. Very moving.

I thought the tuning of the 4 singers at the start was off or at least one of the was.

the rest of it was excellent. I thought Bill Bailey was Excellent.

I enjoyed it but Freddie would have adored it!

Yes, I was getting stressed listening to the typewriter piece! I imagine the percussion guy in the orchestra was wincing.

I quite liked the Bohemian Rhapsody, though I agree that something went a bit weird during part of the quartet, Brian May messed up slightly, and a classically-trained singer is never going to sound ‘rock’.

The thing that seemed most ‘off’ to me was the start of ‘The Gathering Tree’, which seemed under-rehearsed. The choirs weren’t in unison.

He definitely would! Was that his voice right at the very end?

BluePeril · 14/09/2025 10:03

Also, Elim Chan is 38!!! She looks about 20!

Terriorist · 14/09/2025 10:03

It was a nice tribute but it wasn’t a patch on Freddie.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 14/09/2025 10:08

I only heard about this on R4 this morning, the clips sounded epic. Will find it on iPlayer later.

It made me think about how astonishing FM’s voice was. I mean, Sam Oladeinde has a great voice, obviously but he made it sound like something from a musical, somehow (which I gather is what he mostly does ). FM made it sound like something extraterrestrial.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 14/09/2025 10:29

Brian May was sad he cocked it up a bit but Roger Taylor was amazing. i was so emotional when i realised it was him banging the gong drum.

Great to see a recovered Brian even if he did slightly miss the cue.

I was thinking the same - Freddie's voice had the most amazing range!

Had that exact conversation with dh. I loved the soloist but he wasn’t a patch on Freddie

HermioneWeasley · 14/09/2025 10:44

I loved it, it made me quite emotional

I loved the soprano (?) and having a proper high voice in it and loved that the song stood up to a full orchestra and sounded magnificent. Brian May was great if not perfect and Roger Taylor at the end was perfection.

Rowgtfc72 · 14/09/2025 13:54

Just watching it now.
Think i would have stuck with four male voices at the beginning and was disappointed the choir didn't headbang a bit.
The singer has an amazing voice, and obviously would never sound like Freddie, but I felt like he'd missed the brief a bit.
Was brilliant to see Brian and Roger. And Freddie would have absolutely loved it!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 14/09/2025 14:25

I liked it. I like this too!

Bohemian Rhapsody Flashmob.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 14/09/2025 20:35

@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads

The intro quartet messed up at the start and the intonation was off for the rest of it. I assume they had a guide note on their in-ears to get started but even once they sorted that out, which took a while, the intonation seemed off - as if they were singing in strict equal temperament when all those close voiced sevenths demand something closer to true temperament.

The remainder of the vocalists were varied - the tenor sounded uncomfortable but the alto was nice.

The 'rock' section with full orchestra was awful, it's supposed to be a cross-rhythm shuffle (4/4, swung, triplets) and without a drummer they completely flubbed it - it just sounds stilted and constantly dragging, my guess is it was arranged in 12/8 and played straight. Look, classical musicians are absolutely amazing, but they do rhythm differently to pop and jazz musicians.

May complete missed his entry for the coda. Daydreaming about badgers I guess.

B- could do better.
