Sparks- so underrated

Underrated isn’t the right word, maybe misunderstood. I am quite a novice Sparks listener (although I’ve seen them in concert three times in the last two years), but I just think they’re amazing. So unabashedly weird and rye and timeless. They are absolutely wonderful, they should be treasured.
Please, fellow Oddballs, join me at marvelling at the Brothers Mael.

Yes, I remember them from the 70s but only really This Town Ain't Big Enough and being fascinated by Ron's deadpan appearance but then I saw them on the Glastonbury coverage a couple of years ago and they really were very good indeed.

Agreed. They are absolutely brilliant live. Their documentary The Sparks Brothers is a great watch. You can hear their influence on other bands but no one sounds like them.

The Sparks Brothers is such a beautiful film. The little epilogue about “It didn’t always go well, but we had each other, so it worked out” was really moving, especially with the dedication to their parents. I haven’t seen Annette yet but hope to soon.

I’m with you. Love going back and watching ‘Good Morning’ on YouTube from time to time!

Sweetpea333 · 29/08/2025 01:44

I disagree, they're massively praised and lauded by other musicians. The reasons why escape me! They're bloody awful!

Brilliant band, I’ve loved Sparks for as long as I can remember. Their quirkiness, humour and superb musicianship is such a rare original combination. So good live too.
Small detail: Ron has adapts his Roland keyboards to spell Ronald 😄

Equator, Equator, you said you'd meet me there
You must be just around the bend....

❤️❤️❤️

Underrated I agree. Their performances on Later with Jools Holland were magnificent.

Also loved when they were given a Cesar Award, Russell gave his acceptance speech entirely in French, something very few US (or indeed UK) musicians could or would do.

RedRec · 02/09/2025 20:54

I absolutely love Sparks!

I was 11 when This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both of Us came out in 1974, and was spellbound by them on Top Of The Pops. Never saw them live until 2023, then again this year. Two of the best concerts I have ever been to. Ron is a songwriting genius and Russell still has that fabulous voice, and the energy of a man half his age.

I intend to have All That played at my funeral. And would leave home for Russell 😊

Wonderful to hear some Sparks love on here.

First became aware of them in the 90s with When Do I Get to Sing “My Way” - gorgeous song that sounds as fresh today as when I first heard it. I dug into their older stuff after that and have been a fan ever since.

CuddlesKovinsky · 02/09/2025 21:10

Oh, they're sheer quality, aren't they?! I love their wit. And you'd never know who they are from their lyrics, they're all off-kilter stories or characters or angles on something...

(Unless they really did have a hippopotamus in their pool)...

🦛😁

TheStickWaver · 03/09/2025 21:50

I've always thought that if they weren't American they would win Eurovision every year. But in a good way.

Frankblackwife · 04/10/2025 13:08

That cate blanchette thing at glasto was surreal, loved it.

lifeisgoodrightnow · 04/10/2025 13:14

I love them . Always have always will. Saw them at Hammy odeon and Wolverhampton this year :-)

Pharazon · 09/10/2025 20:07

They are brilliant. The Last Dinner Party seem very influenced by them and do a fab cover of This Town:
