Does your style match your music taste?

I mainly listen to rock and metal, Korn Placebo Opeth etc (yes I’m stuck in a time warp).

I have blonde hair and wear glittery eyeshadow and pink blusher. I don’t own black eyeliner. I mainly wear floral dresses and espadrilles in summer. Fairisle knits and skinny jeans in winter.

I don’t have any piercings apart from an earring in each ear, and no tattoos.

I know it doesn’t matter one bit, but does anyone else have a music identity that doesn’t fit their fashion identity?

I like a wide variety of music and I guess it’s fair to say that I don’t have a particular style. I like all sorts of clothing and colours. I guess I’m a bit of a magpie.

I'm similar to @Funderthighs I used to admire the scary metal/goth look but I've never suited it, I have the sort of face that makes people think 'she's a nice safe person to watch my suitcase while I go to the toilet on the train'.

ScarlettSunset · 24/08/2025 09:10

No. It did when I was younger.

I am also very much into rock and metal and pretty much lived the metal look too for a very long time.
But the style didn't actually suit me at all. I have realised as I got older that the style that suits me best is more 'British Countryside'. I'm not sure how else to describe it..But it's definitely not metal.

And I don't care. I like how I look and I like what I listen to and I find it entertaining that they don't match up.

naomisno1fan · 24/08/2025 09:12

Yes, I used to be like this. The one in goth clubs who didn’t look goth. Blonde hair & lots of pink.

RosesAndHellebores · 24/08/2025 09:13

I like heavy metal and glam rock. My first album was The Slider by TRex. I was born in 1960.

When I was young I was Sloaney and am very cashmere and pearls at heart.

LoveMyLifeAlways · 24/08/2025 09:16

Why should it? Why would I style myself to advertise a certain style of music?

Sera1989 · 24/08/2025 09:37

I mainly like screamo and metal, but aside from a lip piercing I got when I was 13 I wear "normal" clothes. Mainly sportswear and summery dresses, along with some slightly "hippy" stuff. I have a few "rock" looking T-shirts, but aside from that, no one would think I'm listening to music that sounds like a rock in a tumble dryer while I'm walking down the street or sitting on the bus, which is funny to think about.

Now I'm in my 30s I tend to stay at the back of gigs with the older crowd and it surprises me that a lot of the younger people dress similar to the emo style that was popular years ago (probably a couple of decades now). Sometimes I seem to be the only person not wearing black!

I listen to 6music a lot and fall into being a stereotypical ‘6music dad’ style wise.

Think shackets, straight leg cut jeans, yellow beanie, greying beard and desert boots.

ProfessorRizz · 24/08/2025 17:17

My problem is that I have very catholic tastes. I like everything from hip hop to Bach.

Clothes-wise, I’m a bit Britpop. Adidas Gazelles, skinny T-shirts, hoodies and mini skirts/shorts. I love a denim pinafore and a sparkly mini dress, too.

Puppylucky · 24/08/2025 17:20

I am the woman who wore a deep blue lurex jacket to a Ruts gig. I loved dressing like a glam girl and always thought that was a more punk statement than the ubiquitous bikers leather and drain pipe jeans!

Gladysknightjustwalkinmyshoes · 24/08/2025 19:22

Wouldn't wear anything that's associated with the Northern soul uniform and didn't back in the day.
I'm near 60 and wear Lacoste,Ma.strum, bellstaff casual wear.

Overtheatlantic · 24/08/2025 19:25

Yacht rock and twin sets for me.

CMOTDibbler · 24/08/2025 19:44

My music taste is hard rock/ metal. No tattoos (I love them but very fussy about the thought of what goes on my skin, still working in mid 50's to get the right design and artist), only a single piercing in each ear. But I do wear a lot of black, and at gigs I'm full black eyeliner/shadow, corset and DMs. Equally though I will wear bright colours and the whole Holland Cooper look suits me.

LlynTegid · 02/09/2025 20:46

Adidas trainers apparently were de rigour for 'indie' children, and as a large part of the music I listen to is 'indie', that's the bit that is related.

LimbOnTheBranchBranchOnTheTreeTheTreeInTheBog · 02/09/2025 20:54

I don't think it's a thing nowadays.

I know plenty of goth looking kids who listen to Tayor swift and the like, and plenty of pink, glittery kids who love metal.

When I was at a Slipknot gig in December there were men and women in skirts and heels, tracksuits, goth and alt gear, jeans and a top and everything in between.

Your taste in music and your taste in clothes and makeup have nothing to do with each other.

Although I have known the odd person who makes their whole personality about how they are so different because they like X music and dress Y way, I'm always embarrassed for them.

MyAcornWood · 02/09/2025 21:00

My music taste is so wide and varied, and, at times I’m sure, questionable(!) it would be a bit impossible to pinpoint it to one particular genre so as to match my style to that, if that makes sense. Funnily enough I was only talking to my husband about this the other day because I was playing emo throwbacks from the noughties, saying how altho my music taste as a teenager was on the emo-side, my style was more emo-lite; checkered vans, lots of black eyeliner and many ear piercings but I gave the heavy side swept fringe and lip piercings a miss!!

AmyDuPlantier · 02/09/2025 21:18

Yeah, I’m into metal and I look and dress like it 🤷‍♀️ 😁
