Hi my son has an audition at Purcell and was wondering if anyone who has children there have any insights as to the process, tips etc. He is set his sights on it but I’m very worried he may be overwhelmed by the process. Many thanks

You might get more comments on the extra curricular music thread. The school is very small though so people may not comment directly as they would be identifiable. Good luck with the audition.

A late reply, hope it went well. Being shortlisted for an audition at 1 of the 4 specialist music schools in England is an achievement itself already regardless of the outcome.

Without going into too much info, my child previously auditioned at Purcell and was offered a place.

The audition is by and large the same for most if not all the specialist music schools:

you play 2 contrasting pieces at your level on the 1st and one other on the 2nd instrument (if applicable), then given a few minutes to sight-read a random short piece before playing it, finally, some general music /aural tests.

Other music schools may also have an "informal chat" with the head.
