So my mother in her mid 50s is obsessed with the Korean boy band BTS. It's actually the most wholesome thing I've ever witnessed.
Are there any women around this age on here that are similarly obsessed with them? Apparently it's a big part of their fanbase.

Side note: I like to call them BLT to wind her up a bit.

Hi! I’m. Kpop fan too (not so much BTS anymore, apart from Suga). There is a Kpop thread running on here somewhere, so may be worth joining that one.

One of my DD is, so I come to a lot of kPop concerts, seen BTS last time they were in London.
No. There are not many 50+ women there. The ones I have seen are mothers with their teens. There are mostly younger women and teens.
But then again - BTS have been on hiatus for a couple of years. And most KPop groups that are popular bow have boys who look really young and it’d be a bit strange for 50+ women to follow juvenile looking boy groups…

VanishingVision · 20/04/2025 00:22

@jsku I'll mention the concert experience to her. Btw, she's not into them in a 'fancying them' sort of way, she just really loves their songs and their meanings etc she says. Her sister does also actually. But yeah, she says she saw some stuff on tiktok where a part of their UK fanbase is 50+ women 🤷‍♀️

@VanishingVision
BTS are not touring, some of their members are in the army. It’s unclear if they’ll tour again.
I am sure there are 50+ fans.

I am just saying that in kPop concerts - its really surreal. Whole stadiums full of english speaking teens and young women screaming and obsessing over these boys, learning korean words, dressing up, buying merch.
Come to think of it - in the last concert we attended, there was an older woman dressed like the teenagers - with pigtails, lightstick and a banner for her favourite team member. It was quite odd, tbh.
Not as odd as seeing single middle aged men ogling female kPop group members - who mostly look like an underaged fantasy girls or a certain genre - but still.

How did your mom even got into BTS? Its not music you hear often in the UK, and they have not put out any new material in a
few years??

VanishingVision · 20/04/2025 00:45

@jsku Yeah she told me they were in the army currently.

I can imagine that's so surreal! But ugh the part about the men, I don't really know know pop music but there's a Japanese metal band called Babymetal whose members are very young Japanese girls in typical school girl outfits and a huge part of their western fanbase is .. you guessed it adult men.

Honestly I'm not sure! I noticed once when I went to see her that she listening to some kind of Asian pop music and I was really surprised and was like what are you listening to Ma?? I think she just happened to hear it on a reel or something? But yeah very, very random!

Yep my DD (12) is a huge fan of them, Suga in particular!

jsku · 20/04/2025 01:00

Most of girl kpop groups are the same - school girl-like outfits, speak in small voices, giggle and talk like little girls.
The odd men i saw in the concerts were few, but disturbing nonetheless.

Boy groups are a little better, but the boys are also looking very young.
BTS guys are a little older, but I still don’t quite see the draw for 50+ age group.
Were there 50+ fans of One Direction, or Backstreet boys, etc? I wonder…

Bur then again, KPop seems to be a worldwide phenomenon…
I get why teen girls like them - they are harmless. Often pretty; non-macho; clean lyrics; well produced dance routines. They are also not allowed to date - so can be an object of teen dreams…
I don’t know which part of it all appeals to grown women.

IwantmyReptv · 23/05/2025 22:10

I think they're great fun. Proper pop group. Never seen them live though.
I think they'll all have finished their military service next summer so maybe they'll reconvene and do a massive tour. I just hope they have made piles of money as they've worked their backsides off for years.
