Anyone here into Indie/Alternative Folk?

I know very little about it, but friends have asked me to go to a Folk Festival with them. Having listened to a few of the artists I've discovered that I really quite like some of it. So far I've heard Man the Lifeboats and Gaz Brookfield and am really taken with their style of music and definitely the lyrics.

Who else is good, who are the big players and are there any radio stations that play this kind of thing? I've googled but there's so much out there I thought here would be a better place to ask. TIA

Gaz Brookfield is brilliant live. He sometimes plays with a full band The Company of Thieves. I also really like Nick Parker, and his band The False Alarms. Many of the band members are the same people!
I also like Skinny Lister.
And of course the king of indie rock/folk, Frank Turner.
There are so many good bands at small, grass roots festivals. Which one are you going to?

Gaz Brookfield is also currently doing a tour of village halls, so that would be a chance to see him at a very local gig.

Thanks for your replies. We haven't booked yet but the potential festival is Folk in a Field in Norfolk.

Will check out the other names thanks

Ooh @Cookerhood I saw the levellers last weekend and Nick Parker was supporting. I thought he was quite good.

He is so good. He grows on you. Even better (I think!) with the full band. I know him to say hi to & I know some of his band members well. It amazes & disappoints me that bands like this have to struggle around the outer reaches of small venues & festivals.

Agree about Skinny Lister too. Saw them at the same festival as Gaz Brookfield last year.

Give Lankum a try. Gothic sounding Irish Trad/Folk band.

Their album "The Livelong Day" is a good starting point.
