What Band do You Unexpectedly Like?

I went with my DH to see a gig by Focus, a Dutch band he raves about, but I haven't listened to them at all. I found myself being very easily drawn in to their music, it was so energetic, varied and different to anyone else I've ever heard. And they are not young, the two senior members are almost 80 and the "youngsters" appeared to be in their 40's, maybe early 50s. What bands have you unexpectedly found that you like?

I have a wide taste in music but I discovered Deep Purple quite late and particularly like Child in Time.

I am really late adopter of Led Zeppelin. I’d just put them in the ‘old hoary bloke’ category and they weren’t current when I was a teen/ in my 20s.

What a mistake. They are amazing, especially on good headphones. Bit similar with Pink Floyd, I’d always written them off as a bit wanky but they are also excellent.

i never thought I’d be a Billy Joel fan. He was popular when I was a young teen and pretty uncool so I disregarded him. But he is such an amazing songwriter who I’ve come to appreciate through singing his songs in my choir.

I felt the same about Elton John! He's such a good song writer.

Love Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd.

@username7891 completely agree about Elton/ Bernie Taupin. Masters of a pop song. I’d never listen to an Elton album or go see him live but yeah -amazing songs. We’re doing I'm still Standing at the moment and it’s such a well crafted song.

See they have probably also fallen into my ‘hoary old bloke’ category so I should go and listen to them …

Miley Cyrus is another surprisingly enjoyable artist, once you get through the controversy and hype.

I am a mid 50s VERY late adopter of Taylor Swift. I hadn’t heard a single song and thought it was all pop music for tweenagers. One of her albums was playing in my friend’s car on a long journey and I loved it, with no idea who it was.

I know she gets hate on MN but I’m a sucker for a good lyric and a song that tells a story, so she’s right up my proverbial alley.

Rocket Man is superb.

Deep Purple are great. I love listening to proper musicians which is why Led Zeppelin are so good.
