Why is Morrissey so despised?

Basically the question is in the title. It seems he is quite unpopular, but he does also seem to have a cult following. I like the Smiths big hits and some of his solo stuff. He's a witty lyricist, but to be honest, not as good as Ian Dury, Jarvis Cocker or Shaun Ryder! All I know about him outside of music is he was a staunch Brexiteer (despite not living here anymore). Also there's speculation about his sexuality, some say he's bisexual others say he's asexual. Also I know he's a staunch vegetarian

I don't know anyone who works in the music industry who likes him. The die hard fans I know who met him have all said he was a cock to them.

I don't think he is racist though. He likes to say things that will shock and he doesn't care who he offends.

His political opinions are pretty far right, and he's miserable and rude to people. He was pretty conspiracy theory / scientists don't know anything oriented during COVID.
Those are the things that put me off him as a person whether it not I liked his music (which I didn't much).
