Covers that were better than the original song

The other day, I got a Prince compilation CD. I always liked 'I feel for you' (Chaka Khan), 'Kiss' (Tom Jones), Nothing compares 2 u' (Sinead O'Connor) and 'Why don't you call me?' (Alicia Keys). Never knew they were originally by Prince. Quite Frankly the covers were better

Here are some others:
Step on by Happy Mondays
Wild World by Maxi Priest
Many rivers to cross by UB40 (only better by a margin though).

STP - Dancing Days

Jodeci - Lately

Freemasons - Uninvited - Just as good as the original.

Shepadoodle · 31/03/2024 00:14

Most of the covers Miley Cyrus has done. I didn't know how talented she was until I fell down a YouTube rabbit hole a couple of years ago.

Whitney Houston - I will always love you (not a favourite song, but it is better than the original).

No it isn’t! The original was song in context, with heart and meaning by the person who penned it. Not belted out to inspire karaoke wannabes forever more (in a terrible film!)

Dolly did a great version of Randy Van Warmer's Just When I Needed You Most.

Not sure if she ever released it though. It's on YouTube.

(Agree about Whitney. Great voice, but just made that song a vocal exercise. Made Dolly a mint though.)

Sineas O'Connor's cover of Nothing Compares to You

Digressing, I heard the best dog name recently.

Dave Growl.

Made me chuckle.

So glad that no-one has said "Fields of Gold" by Eva Cassidy, because I really hate what she did to it.

I agree, I think she ruined it.

Bad Wolves version of Zombie. Dolores O'Riordan loved it was due to re-record vocals with them but passed away the day before.

Yeah this is great, I hadn't heard any of their stuff but they supported Five finger death punch a few years ago and it absolutely slapped.

Saying that I personally really like FFDP's version of House of the rising sun, Ivan puts a lot behind it. However they butchered the offsprings Gone Away.

Her cover of Nothing Else Matters was horrendous!

mydogisthebest · 31/03/2024 09:20

For me the best version of Hallelujah is by kd Lang.

Sounds of Silence is one of my most favourite songs ever and holds so many memories. I absolutely hate the Disturbed version

Our Lips Are Sealed by Fun Boy Three originally by The Bangles.
Stop Me by Mark Ronson originally The Smiths

Sacrilege - Our Lips Are Sealed was by The Go Go's not The Bangles.

Gary Moore Whiskey in the Jar.

What about it?!

MrsAvocet · 31/03/2024 11:21

I'll probably be struck by lightning for suggesting anyone could out do Hendrix but I prefer the Stevie Ray Vaughan versions of both Voodoo Chile and Little Wing.

Ljm90 · 31/03/2024 11:42

A couple of PPs mentioned Sound Of Silence by Disturbed: Universally loved by bald men with tribal tattoos. I despise it.

I prefer the Kirsty MacColl version of A New England to the Billy Bragg original

Yes. And Billy Bragg thought so too! He wrote an extra verse for her version, but sings it in her memory now.

With you on The Stranglers' version of Walk on By, it's my favourite cover version, absolutely wonderful.

Yeh, the full version kinda reminds me of Light My Fire by The Doors when it “goes for a stroll in the trees”.

Totally agree (ref Sounds of Silence).

Edited

Me too, the Disturbed version can't hold a candle to Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel's harmonies and that 60's beat.
