Covers that were better than the original song

The other day, I got a Prince compilation CD. I always liked 'I feel for you' (Chaka Khan), 'Kiss' (Tom Jones), Nothing compares 2 u' (Sinead O'Connor) and 'Why don't you call me?' (Alicia Keys). Never knew they were originally by Prince. Quite Frankly the covers were better

Here are some others:
Step on by Happy Mondays
Wild World by Maxi Priest
Many rivers to cross by UB40 (only better by a margin though).

Slightly different words, as it uses recent events, but Fall Out Boy singing We didn't start the fire.

I absolutely love it, and rehearse it regularly 😂

Sorry Bryan Adams, but DJ Sammy’s version of Heaven was much better.

I don't know about better than the original, but The Staves have done great versions of Dancing in the Dark and I'm on Fire

The Sound of Silence - Disturbed

comeondover · 30/03/2024 21:52

oh wait - I meant LOLO for Dancing in the Dark

Kate Bush, Rocket Man. One of a very small number of covers that perhaps top the original. Jeff Buckley, Hallelujah; Peter Gabriel, The Book of Love are a couple of others. Soulless covers that add nothing to the original version are the worst - Adele, Make you feel my love; Disturbed, Sound of Silence; GNR, Live and Let Die are amongst the worst offenders. Other opinions are of course available.

Thanks to the Spotify playlist of Dancing in the Dark covers, I've just discovered the version by Lucy Dacus - recommend 👌

Beyonce's version of Jolene is interesting.

Just remembered Thrashing Doves version of Sympathy for the Devil.

NahNeedsGarlic · 30/03/2024 22:23

Chris Cornell ‘Billie Jean’.

I prefer the Kirsty MacColl version of A New England to the Billy Bragg original

thatdarncat · 30/03/2024 22:28

Tina Turners version of Addicted to Love is the absolute best.

The best cover ever has to be Hurt by Johnny Cash. I remember Jo Wiley commentating from a Glastonbury that here are nine inch nails with the second best version of their own song.

Get by with a little help from my friends by Joe Cocker is much better than The Beatles.

Running Up That Hill - Placebo
The original by Kate Bush is good but I find her voice annoying🫣

100% agree! Placebo version is amazing!!!

Yes! Great artists both of them, to be fair.

WTF? I've seen it all now!

It's a load of warbly shite and doesn't even have tbe same meaning as the original.

I totally agree. She destroyed it.

HappiestSleeping · 30/03/2024 23:08

Van Halen's version of You Really Got Me
Kiss / Ace Frehley's version of 2000 Man
Halestorm's version of Bad Romance
Linkin Park's version of Rolling in the Deep
Marilyn Manson's version of Personal Jesus

Soft Cell, Tainted Love

Definitely! Original is nowhere near as inventive.

MrsAvocet · 30/03/2024 23:09

The Bauhaus version of Ziggy Stardust is about a million times better than the Bowie original, the Guns N Roses cover of Knockin' On Heaven's Door is far better than Bob Dylan's and The Jeff Healey Band recorded the only version of While My Guitar Gently Weeps that is worth listening to - the Beatles' original is crap.
