Covers that were better than the original song

The other day, I got a Prince compilation CD. I always liked 'I feel for you' (Chaka Khan), 'Kiss' (Tom Jones), Nothing compares 2 u' (Sinead O'Connor) and 'Why don't you call me?' (Alicia Keys). Never knew they were originally by Prince. Quite Frankly the covers were better

Here are some others:
Step on by Happy Mondays
Wild World by Maxi Priest
Many rivers to cross by UB40 (only better by a margin though).

Little wing - Sting
Rocket man - Kate Bush
Dear Prudence - Siouxsie (great shout by PP)

These have all come up before but I love:

Alien ant farm - smooth criminal

Guns n roses - live and let die

Pet shop boys - always on my mind

And why Lulu was ever let anywhere near it is a whole other thread ...

'I sang with Bowie ...'

'I sang with the Stones ...'

Not well, though, hen.

Does she get bonus points for covering Relight My Fire- although I suppose it’s credited to Take That isn’t it 😂

Walk on by - the Stranglers - how could I forget that. THE BEST version beating Dionne and that's saying something

Here comes the sun - the original by the Beatles it is simply beautiful, one of my favourite songs, BUT I think the Richie Haven's version is so powerful - he puts so much feeling into it - it's particularly beautiful if you watch a video of him singing it live. Makes me feel alive.

Whisky in the jar - Metallica

Not really a cover though!

Absolutely agree with all of the above.

Currently have GnR CD in the car, and have been listening to it on repeat with DD on the school run for months. Love their version of Live and Let Die, as well as Sympathy for the Devil.

When you've only ever heard the Caution Horses' cover of Walking After Midnight and you finally hear Patsy Cline singing it, she sounds absurdly cheerful and upbeat about walking around in the dark, in the small hours, searching in vain for her missing man.

Possibly controversial but I find most Dylan covers better than the original.
Adele, Make you Feel my Love, My Chemical Romance doing Desolation Row, Stevie Nicks Just Like A Woman. Any version of Knockin on Heavens Door.

I agree. But then I find Bob Dylan overrated and dire. AWFUL 'singing' voice.

I also really don't like Eva Cassidy's version of 'Over The Rainbow.' I find it drab.

Whitney Houston's version of 'I will always love you; makes my ears bleed. Dolly Parton's version is waaaay better.

I like Natalie Imbruglia's version of 'Torn' better than the original by Ednaswap.

YES to 'The Man Who Sold The World' by Nirvana - though I do like Lulu and Bowie's versions.

'Uptown girl' by Westlife sounded exactly the same as Billy Joel's IMO.

Yes to these 3!

The White Stripes ‘Jolene’

Miley Cyrus' version of Jolene is also amazing. She's also sung it as a duet with Dolly (I believe Dolly is her Godmother)

2000 miles, Coldplay

Delores from the Cranberries singing Go Your Own Way (Fleetwood Mac). The live version when she's on a French radio station is best.

karriecreamer · 30/03/2024 20:24

Olivia Newton John's "Jolene"

DominiqueBernard · 30/03/2024 20:24

Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah

So glad that no-one has said "Fields of Gold" by Eva Cassidy, because I really hate what she did to it.
