Covers that were better than the original song

The other day, I got a Prince compilation CD. I always liked 'I feel for you' (Chaka Khan), 'Kiss' (Tom Jones), Nothing compares 2 u' (Sinead O'Connor) and 'Why don't you call me?' (Alicia Keys). Never knew they were originally by Prince. Quite Frankly the covers were better

Here are some others:
Step on by Happy Mondays
Wild World by Maxi Priest
Many rivers to cross by UB40 (only better by a margin though).

A bit mad but I prefer Kim Wilde's 'You just keep me hangin' on' to the original.

TheRulerofThings · 30/03/2024 19:47

Alison Krauss’ version of Baby Now that I’ve Found You (originally by The Foundations). It’s so beautiful and full of yearning.

Whatwouldscullydo · 30/03/2024 19:47

Marilyn manson- tainted love
Disturbed- sound of silence

Darkdiamond · 30/03/2024 19:48

Light My Fire by Will Young

I'll get my coat.

Lay Lady Lay by Magnet and Gemma Hayes is far better than the Bob Dylan original.

Possibly controversial but I find most Dylan covers better than the original.
Adele, Make you Feel my Love, My Chemical Romance doing Desolation Row, Stevie Nicks Just Like A Woman. Any version of Knockin on Heavens Door.

IHateLegDay · 30/03/2024 19:48

Middle of the night - Loveless

MyBigFatGreekSalad · 30/03/2024 19:48

Rollercoaster of love- the red hot chilli peppers cover!

Loubelle70 · 30/03/2024 19:49

Crosby, stills, Nash and young : Woodstock: , better than joni mitchell version.
Then again, joni mitchell cover of both sides now is amazing better than original

LondonPleaseButJustForOneDay · 30/03/2024 19:51

Michael Jackson - Come Together

BobbyBiscuits · 30/03/2024 19:51

I prefer the scissor sisters version of 'comfortably numb' to the Pink Floyd version.
I also like Faith no more's version of 'Easy' as opposed to the commodores or Boys II men, Westlife etc!

SkaneTos · 30/03/2024 19:52

I agree with @gemsgv .
In general you like the version you hear first the best.

Ponytailsandpinot · 30/03/2024 19:52

N-Trance's Stayin' Alive cover.

AnImaginaryCat · 30/03/2024 19:52

The Man Who Sold the World by Nirvana.

Though I think even David Bowie himself acknowledged it was!

Fizbosshoes · 30/03/2024 19:53

@GellerYeller

Yes to Nirvana man who sold the world!

Forgetaboutme · 30/03/2024 19:54

Hurt Johnny Cash version
Always on my mind Pet Shop Boys version
Behind blue eyes Limp Bizkit version
Stripped Rammstein version

LivingDeadGirlUK · 30/03/2024 19:54

Disturbed's version of Land of Confusion is epic

Alian ant farm - smooth criminal.

Also Killswitch Engaged's version of Holy Diver, although original is also brilliant.

Guns n Roses - live and let die
George Michael - I can't make you love me
Adele - make you feel my love

Ah, you reminded me. "As" by Mary J Blige and George Michael. And I usually love Stevie Wonder but the cover is amazing

Ponytailsandpinot · 30/03/2024 19:55

Oh and I love Curiosity Killed The Cat's cover of Hang On In There Baby.

tabbymctwat · 30/03/2024 19:56

Erasure - Take a chance on me
Adam Lambert - Believe (originally by Cher)
Mark Ronson - Stop Me
Jack Black - Hit Me Baby (One More Time)

MassiveWordSalad · 30/03/2024 19:56

Re The Man Who Sold the World - Bowie went on tour with Nine Inch Nails in the nineties after Nirvana's version came out, and got pissed off with all the youngsters who thought the old man was hip for covering Nirvana when he played his own songGrin He did like their version though.

Fizbosshoes · 30/03/2024 19:57

Athena51 · 30/03/2024 19:39

That's the original version, Dolly wrote it. It is far better though.

Didn't Elvis want "I will always love you" and Dolly didn't want to give away the publishing rights ?

AutumnCrow · 30/03/2024 19:58

Fizbosshoes · 30/03/2024 19:53

@GellerYeller

Yes to Nirvana man who sold the world!

And why Lulu was ever let anywhere near it is a whole other thread ...

'I sang with Bowie ...'

'I sang with the Stones ...'

Not well, though, hen.

MassiveWordSalad · 30/03/2024 20:00

Tori Amos does a version of 'A Case of You' by Joni Mitchell that I prefer to the original.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 30/03/2024 18:59

All Along the Watchtower, Jimi Hendrix

It's a Bob Dylan song. There are many classic Dylan songs which are best in his versions, but also lots and lots that other people do better, and that's possibly the best cover ever made.

Beat me to it.

The Stranglers - Walk on By
Allen Ant Farm - Smooth Criminal

Oneofmykind · 30/03/2024 20:02

MrsDoylesLastTeabag · 30/03/2024 18:34

Jeff Buckley's cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah".

Michael Andrews and Gary Jules's cover of Tears for Fears' "Mad World".

Those are my immediate go-tos. Sure I'll think of more in due course.

Edited

Absolutely re Mad World, came on to say the same.

Disagree with posters who say Eva Cassidy version of Somewhere over the Rainbow. Judy Garland all the way!

Flying Pickets version of Only You.
