Chetham's music scholarship

Hi, my son is 14 years old and he is in year 9. He loves music and he is keen to go to Chetham's School of Music. I understand one has to go for audition. Does anyone know what is 'minimum' grade to have in order to gain a place there? Thank you.

There are no minimum grades and admission is purely by audition. Realistically it depends how popular his instrument is - if it one of the more popular orchestral instruments such as violin or flute he will likely be expected to be playing at very high level (equivalent to grade 7 or 8) already, or if not doing so to at least show a very high level of potential. If it is for double bass or tuned percussion or something more niche, then the entry level is generally lower. They run "taster auditions" so you can get a feel for what they are expecting.

There's a music thread in extra curricular you might find useful, lots of people with children at different levels, up to conservatoire and be you. People won't generally comment on the individual schools as they are so small it would be identifying.
