Was never a fan back in the day, but enjoyed the popular songs. However recently I’ve discovered Pictures of You and what a beautiful song it is !
Any more I need to try ?

I love a bit of The Cure. I once sold Robert Smith a hammer and an extension lead when I worked Saturdays in Woollies. It was about 40 years back but still one of my finest moments.

My favourite song is Cut Here, though there's a dark back story behind it.The observant ones amongst you will notice it's an anagram of The Cure. Robert Smith wrote it about Billy McKenzie from the Associates, who was a good friend. Billy McKenzie went backstage after a Cure gig and asked Robert Smith for a drink, but he was too busy. Unknown to RS, BM was suffering from depression and took his own life a few weeks later, and RS never got over not agreeing to the drink. The video's so sad...the pain on RS's face is too obvious.

If Only Tonight We Could Sleep

And all the others

Can anyone find a link to that video of Robert smith when they were being inducted into I think the hall of fame or something? It’s gold. Can’t work out how to!

Arnaquer · 02/09/2022 20:38

All of the above
Plus Mint car

Honeyroar · 02/09/2022 20:40

while there have been some fabulous songs and albums suggested, the OP thought Pictures of you was a beautiful song. Along those lines I’d try Lovesong, Catch, Just like Heaven, On a night like this. Why can’t I be you?

TwoMonthsOff · 02/09/2022 20:40

@Spidey66
RIP Billy too
there is a rumour that ‘William it was really nothing’ by the Smiths is about him

Whatyagonnadokatie · 02/09/2022 20:41

in between days

TwoMonthsOff · 02/09/2022 20:46

@Spidey66
the hammer story is cool, I can’t imagine Bob doing DIY though…..how did you handle that ? i would have been star struck in my younger days

TwoMonthsOff · 02/09/2022 20:47

@Doggyxmas

this one hopefully

sjpkgp1 · 02/09/2022 20:52

Great thread. Love most of the suggestions, especially A Forest, still in my top 5 of all time. I like Charlotte Sometimes, Lullaby and Boys don't cry too (plus loads of others). Despite being a fan at the time, I wouldn't wish The Top album on anyone, especially the song The Top, which I spent long angst-filled teenage hours "trying to like".

countrylifer · 02/09/2022 20:53

Love the Cure. They are incredible live and Robert Smith's voice is as good now as it was in the 80s. My add which I don't think has been mentioned is All Cats are Grey. Bloody love that song.

But look up live performances of A Forest on YouTube. One below. Damn the Cure are good

He could have bought it for a handyman!

I was pretty starstruck and wasn't able to say anything! I just told him the cost, asked him if he wanted a free carrier and he paid me cash. The 16 year old me was not as confident as the 56 year old me....now I'd ask him to sign a till roll or something!

I didn't know the story about William it Was Really Nothing.

My favourite Robert Smith moment Grin

I watched this over and over when it happened - it never fails to make me laugh 😂

TwoMonthsOff · 02/09/2022 20:58

We need more threads like this

Echo and the bunnymen, the smiths Nick Cave/ wedding present, Cocteau twins, the associates, banshees, the Fall, Wire and all the other talented 80’s bands not the disposable 80’s bands that most people think of when the 80’s are mentioned

sjpkgp1 · 02/09/2022 20:59

Does anyone remember when, every week, they had the parody of Robert Smith doing "happy" songs on the Mary Whitehouse experience (Rule Britannia and the laughing policeman being two I think) and eventually he came on himself. I used to look forward to it every week.

TwoMonthsOff · 02/09/2022 21:02

@Spidey66
well we didn’t have phones in those days, you would have done a ‘selfie’ but the memory is lovely.
I loved the Associates, I have ‘Sulk’ on vinyl -do you remember ‘party fears two’
i found this just now on Wiki….
‘The song is popularly believed to have been about Morrissey's short-lived friendship with Billy Mackenzie, lead singer of the Associates. The Associates' compilation album Double Hipness, released in August 2000, included the song "Stephen, You're Really Something", recorded by Billy MacKenzie and Alan Rankine during the band's reunion in 1993 as a response to "William, It Was Really Nothing".

Drinkingpop · 02/09/2022 21:04

Harold and Joe

Spidey66 · 02/09/2022 21:07

My brothers loved The Associates, loved Party Fears Two & Country Club.

Loved those videos in the Hall of Fame, but slightly disappointed he didn't say, 'I wouldn't have won this without the hammer and extension lead Spidey66 sold me in the Marble Arch branch of Woolworths back in 1982.'

TwoMonthsOff · 02/09/2022 21:10

@Spidey66
😭😭😭genuine
what if he had ? you would have freaked out and thought it was a dream !
forgot about club country thanks for the reminder

I think morrisey and billy were in a relationship if I remember correctly

countrylifer · 02/09/2022 21:12

Also One Hundred Years, and The Kiss, very loud on headphones when I need to get my head away from my non stop talking children!

Spidey66 · 02/09/2022 21:13

We're they? Wow, didn't know that, Morrissey always made a big thing about being asexual.....maybe it was to cover up that he was gay?

WingBingo · 02/09/2022 21:17

Always loved The Cure and I have been listening to them again recently.

I remember writing the lyrics to Just Like heaven on my jotter at school.

But yes OP, Pictures Of You is outstanding; uplifting and sad at the same time

TwoMonthsOff · 02/09/2022 21:19

@Spidey66
i want to say that ….not 100% sure but I’ve read a lot of online info in my time, I guess only mozza knows the truth
