Mumsnet is a weird music void, am I wrong?

Goawayangryman · 25/08/2022 22:39

I love my music: listening, playing (badly), and chatting about artists and gigs and festivals.

Mumsnet usually comes up trumps for most other hobbies but seems to be a bit crap for music lovers. All I ever really see are posts about kids learning instruments.

Reddit or real life oro

there are lots of music threads on here, or so I find.
I usually find I don't share taste in music with other MNers, that's fine too.

Klank · 05/09/2022 14:20

I don’t talk about music in real life much, whenever I have I’ve mostly got blank looks. Like a pp said, there’s so much out there that overlap with any one person is quite unlikely. I went to see Everything Everything recently and they were incredible.

I want to go see Porij soon but can’t think of anyone to go with. DH would go but that makes it a much bigger deal, babysitters etc. I just want to go and dance.

Fingernails4Cash · 05/09/2022 14:26

There are loads of music related threads – people sometimes ask for your favourite song by particular band or a particular theme, and I have made some quality playlists based on some of these discussions!
Although to be fair they stand out of my mind because they don't come up all that often so maybe you do have a point

stopitstopitnow · 05/09/2022 14:52

I love music. I can read it and play a few instruments but my ambition is to learn bass guitar and saxophone (sorry neighbours 😅). My playlist includes classical, Glenn Miller (dad's influence), 70's glam rock, punk, reggae 80's/90's indie, grunge and lots of other genres. I don't care what it is as long as, to my ears, the melody/words sound good then I'll listen to it.

faffadoodledo · 05/09/2022 16:01

When we go out to dinner with friends we often pass a phone round and everyone takes it in turn to choose something from Spotify. It's a really good way to broaden your tastes (and learn some surprising things about friends!)

Bottomofthepileasusual · 09/09/2022 10:19

Planet Rock is my go to radio station and they are playing beautiful tunes today

Proudofeveryone · 09/09/2022 10:54

Recently I was out with a new group of ladies and we were discussing
what music each of us liked. I'm more of the old Rod Stewart and the faces type,
Tina Turner and Tom Jones etc. Seen all in convert.
One said she loved Bruce Springsteen now I didn't like 'dancing in the dark' so in
my ignorance never listened to anything else but came home and started watching you tube my god where have I been all these years. I can't get enough
DH has now bought us tickets for next year.

dotdotdotdash · 14/09/2022 21:15

I’m going to see The Comet is Coming next week @Goawayangryman! Main man Shabaka Hutchings did an album called Afrikan Culture I really liked a lot too. And Waaju is good for Afro jazz vibes too.

More folk Indy pop, I saw Aldous Harding at All Points East this year and she knocked it out of the park! She has a lot of creative vision and such a good songwriter.

I agree Green Man and End of the Road playlists are great - I’d love to go to end of the road but it’s always just before schools go back!

What are you listening to?

Jellykat · 14/09/2022 21:20

I've been on quite a few music threads, but admittedly they've been going when things like Glasto or recently the Taylor Hawkins tribute gig was on..
Could defo do with more..

EmmaH2022 · 14/09/2022 21:23

I’ve been on some great music threads

currently loving Macklemore “Maniac”

the 1975 - happiness & I’m in love with you - anyone else think he is looking at himself at the end of the video? Ready to segue into another genius Somebody Else type video?

and oddly, the Lumineers “Hey Ho”.

Love Springsteen - would love to see him live but tickets are ££££

My favourite artist over the past few years has been Panic! At The Disco. I fell down a Brendon Urie YouTube hole and never came out 😆

Very talented (and handsome) man.

EmmaH2022 · 14/09/2022 21:25

Proud if you like Bruce, may I suggest Sam Fender. Starting with The Borders.

Echobelly · 14/09/2022 21:33

I am trying to use my YouTube music subscription to find new stuff I like after totally neglecting new music for years - rather to my suprise I ended up with a DH who is not a big music fan, and has people have said, kids happen so I kind of didn't end up being as music-y as I expected with non-classical music.

I used lockdowns to listen through to NME 'top 50 albums' of last few years and discovered some contemporary (I won't necessarily say 'new') acts I like - Japanese House, Christine & the Queens, Kelly Lee Owens, Easy Life, Little Simz, Dave, Working Mens Club, Nadine Shah.

WeCanBeHappyUnderground · 14/09/2022 21:42

Massive music fan here. My user name is from a song I adore by Ben Folds Five. Off to see Ash on Sunday to relive my teens.
Great to see some fab slightly miche bands mentioned here - seen the excellent Hackney Colliery Band live a couple of times.
Grunge/80s-90s alternative is very much my passion but lately I'm listening to a lot more dance/electro stuff like Boards of Canada, Royksöpp and Jon Hopkins.

RiftGibbon · 14/09/2022 21:54

I love music too! Except when I talk to people about some of the stuff I listen to they just look blank.
Here's a grabshot from one of my playlists.

Off to see Kula Shaker in January, which I'm really looking forward to.

Loving this thread, Let’s keep recommendations coming!

@WeCanBeHappyUnderground love me a bit of electronica. I don’t listen to it quite so much these days but DH is still very much in to his electro/techno/ambient. Deffo recommend the likes of Aphex Twin, Plaid, Black Dog, Squarepusher, Autechre, Amon Tobin based on your list.

This week I’ve been listening to quite a bit of Fontaines DC, The Snuts and Sports Team. Going to see Sports Team at an intimate venue next week. I hear they put on quite a good show.

DigestiveDip · 15/09/2022 15:30

Love music. Worked in the music industry for years. Listen to my tunes every day!

MN seems to have a lot of indie-ish type music lovers, though. The type of music I love (hip hop, R&B, reggae, house) doesn’t seem that well known or loved, so I don’t really post about it.

I saw them a few years back. They were fab.

Bottomofthepileasusual · 15/09/2022 19:02

What hugs are coming up for everyone.

My next ones are an elvis evening locally
Then month I've got Billy Idol with Yoyah supporting. Then later the same week I've got Skid Row.

PermanentTemporary · 15/09/2022 20:57

@DigestiveDip i do love a bit of hip hop but am very out of date. Anyone you can recommend to lead me gently forward from my old skool cul de sac?

countrypunk · 15/09/2022 21:30

I love music too! My username is a Kristin Hersh lyric.

If anyone hasn't been, I massively recommend End of the Road festival in Dorset. It was a couple of weekends ago. I didn't go this year but I've been the past 7 years and it's a treasure trove of new music. It introduced me to Snail Mail, Let's Eat Grandma, Black Country New Road, CMAT, Penelope Isles, Sorry, Big Thief, Whitney, The Beths, Gia Margaret, Ohtis, Helena Deland, Soccer Mommy. And I've seen loads of bands I've loved for years there - Sufjan Stevens, Hot Chip, Mitski, Joanna Newsom. Everyone on this thread should go!

I have some groups of friends who aren't into music at all in any way I recognise, and they are always all female groups. I do however know lots of women who are into music, thank goodness.

Music doesn't seem to be conversational currency among groups of women the way it is for men. I don't really get it. DP and I connect all the time via music.

I don't believe it is for one second that women are naturally less interested in music. I'd put it down to -

Women being less naturally inclined to be interested in the trivia around music. To what extent are chats about music really about music?

Women being less naturally inclined to get into a competition about who is coolest based on who likes the coolest music

Women being less likely to have the spare time to spend on an (ultimately) pointless hobby. I'm not saying listening to music is pointless, and that can be done whilst doing other things, I'm talking about talking about music or sitting online finding obscure songs from a band you like. It is fun and worthwhile but it is not high priority.

RiftGibbon · 22/09/2022 08:52

I don't care if people think what I listen to is 'cool' or not. I listen to a wide range of things but I like rock (although what I define as such may not fall unto that category by mainstream standards).
Many many years ago at school I got into a row with a girl because was talking to her boyfriend (and another couple of guys at the same time). We were talking about music - the bands The Mission and Bauhaus. They guys liked them, none of the girls did. But apparently, this was "flirting".

I have been told that I don't look like the sort of person who listens to the sort of music I listen to. I have no idea what that means.

I'm currently trying to get a copy of the new Afghan Whigs album. I understand that the late Mark Lanegan had some influence on it. I enjoyed the Gutter Twins work they did together (well, ML and Greg Dulli), so expecting good things.

MichaelAndEagle · 22/09/2022 09:01

I find as I drive hardly anywhere now, I don't really have music radio on much. So I have to make a conscious choice to listen in the house or on commute when I'm much more likely to listen to a podcast.
I would like to be more up to date. When it was the brits I'd hardly heard of anyone.
I looked a few up on Spotify and listened and liked lots of it.
Where do people find out about new bands? In the old days, it was playground and common room chat. Or radio 1 constantly on in my bedroom.
I put radio 1 on sometimes but honestly most of i found pretty uninspiring.
Is radio 6 better?
I think i just prefer podcasts as background sound and find music more enjoyable when shared.

MichaelAndEagle · 22/09/2022 09:03

Should have added, when I choose to listen to music I'm more likely to go for old favourites, meaning I'm never up to date!
My DD is getting into music now, maybe that will help?
