Mumsnet is a weird music void, am I wrong?

I love my music: listening, playing (badly), and chatting about artists and gigs and festivals.

Mumsnet usually comes up trumps for most other hobbies but seems to be a bit crap for music lovers. All I ever really see are posts about kids learning instruments.

New recommendations would be great. I spend too much time listening to old stuff. I listened to the Heartstopper soundtrack to see what Netflix thinks the kids are into.. Discovered Chairlift, Dayglo, Lauran Hibberd who all do dance pop with an indie vibe and are a bit less twee than others that I’ve stumbled across in that genre at the moment.
Have just been listening to Witches by Alice Phoebe Lou. Then Lizzo’s Truth Hurts which is a classic. and I love the Avalanches!

@CurtainSchmurtain I haven’t RTFT but I came on to say something similar to what you have said. I find music quite a private thing. Music was sometimes used as a way to almost people at school so I do feel almost secretive about what I listen to. Strangely though, TV is something I’m happy to share about!

I know it’s completely ridiculous!

Monty27 · 26/08/2022 01:02

OP I see what you're saying is a great idea @mumsnet.
It's a huge topic and would probably draw huge interest if it's designed in some genre specific threads and a general chitchat of course 👍🏻

Monty27 · 26/08/2022 01:04

Gigs and festivals would draw attention too I think 👏

Rollergirl11 · 26/08/2022 16:09

I have always thought that there is a huge music shaped black hole on Mumsnet! I have been obsessed with music since about the age of 14 and still am. DH is the same, as is 16yr old DD. In fact DD and I live for our drives that we probably go on once a week purely so we can listen to music very very loudly.

DD is currently at Reading festival and she has been to 3 other festivals and various gigs over the last 6 months where she has seen the likes of: Sam Fender, The Wombats, Foals, Declan McKenna, Two door cinema club, Inhaler, Bombay bicycle club, Kasabian, Wet leg, Jamie T, Working Mens Club. Her music taste is most definitely influenced by mine.

My latest obsession is with Working Mens Club. They are a young band from Yorkshire and they have just released their second album. Synthy-guitar based sound very much in the ilk of Joy Division/New Order.

I agree there really should be a gigs & festivals section in Mumsnet. I wanted a thread for Reading so I could speak to other posters with kids attending but had to stick it in the ‘Teenager’ section.

Goawayangryman · 26/08/2022 23:37

Yep, I think we have definitely found a @mumsnet void. Could you consider adding a gigs and festivals thread please? We've got ones for many other hobbies and this seems like a major omission ;)

Absolutely agree with this! Music is massive for a lot of people. I like tons of different stuff, and I still go raving at 52, it would be great to have a music and festivals section!

faffadoodledo · 04/09/2022 08:57

I've just contributed to another thread about what we're obsessed with at the moment. But I think a "What are we listening to now" thread would be great

PermanentTemporary · 04/09/2022 09:21

Thanks @Rollergirl11, enjoying Working Mens Club v much. A distinct pinch of Depeche Mode in there.

I generally like all bands with names like that (cf Public Service Broadcasting, British Sea Power) but I haven't worked out how to classify that 😬

faffadoodledo · 04/09/2022 09:34

@PermanentTemporary Hackney Colliery Band is another whose name falls into that category. Tho admittedly stylewise is quite different!

Goawayangryman · 04/09/2022 21:46

@faffadoodledo how to classify that either but I think you'd find lots of music you liked by looking up Green Man/ End of the Road festival playlists from the last 5 years or so. They tend to host your kind of eclectic, earthy, slightly cerebral bands . GM in particular.

Gah. Post fail. That was really to @PermanentTemporary . Sorry.

I’m one of these apparently completely bizarre women who you wouldn’t be able to have a conversation with, as I’d say I’m ‘not really into music’. In reality, I have an autistic child who screams/squeals/vocalises for 90% of the day so when he’s quiet, I can no longer bear to listen to music/watch TV as I need total silence to reset. I used to love music, and I promise it doesn’t make me a person who can’t hold an interesting conversation!

Goawayangryman · 04/09/2022 22:03

I would never think that based on your listening habits @WaddleAway :( I completely get that you probably just want total peace -am familiar with ASD monologues, if not vocalisations, but certainly, uninvited one-way audio about niche special interests. It's challenging to deal with, especially I think if you've always been quite into music and sounds.

OP posts:
WaddleAway · 04/09/2022 22:07

Yes I hate that I can’t feel passionate about music any more! I can barely hold a conversation now to be honest. Interesting reading about other people’s listening habits though!

Goawayangryman · 04/09/2022 22:15

@WaddleAway how old is yr child/ children? I went 7 years almost entirely without music when mine were little. The advent of computer games and an online life for them when they approached teen years meant I could actually do some hobbies again .

OP posts:
Hoolihan · 04/09/2022 22:24

I was music mad as a teenager but like others here feel I lost my way a bit when I had kids. I went to Glasto this year though and it has really sparked my interest again so I'm trying to make up for lost time! At the moment I'm mostly listening to Wolf Alice, Confidence Man, Self Esteem, Foals, Avalanches, Dave, Bicep. Eagerly awaiting the new Arctic Monkeys & Taylor Swift albums!

Batmanandrabbit · 04/09/2022 22:26

Some great bands listed here. I do love music, we have been to see some amazing bands this year. My highlights included: Mystery Jets, Horse Girl, Wolf Alice, The Cribs, and Yo La Tengo, I also going to see Porridge Radio in November and the Cure in December. I am eagerly awaiting dates for the 2023 Pulp reunion tour. I will watch this thread for some new ideas and add any others that spring to mind. I also love joy and energy of Wet Leg. There are some amazing young female musicians doing their thing at the moment x

Hoolihan · 04/09/2022 22:29

Tried to see Wet Leg at Glastonbury but the crowd was INSANE! They had put them on a too small stage and we couldn't get anywhere near.

WaddleAway · 05/09/2022 10:27

9, 7 and 4 but the 4 year old is the one with autism so I have quite a few years left before hobbies can resume I think!

Bottomofthepileasusual · 05/09/2022 13:22

Awesome thread.
My music taste is probably that of a 52 year old man. My tastes are from 80's big hair rock to wham, Duran, Shaky and Tom Jones and lots in between.

Last gig was Rival Sons & Dirty Honey which was fantastic

FunnysInLaJardin · 05/09/2022 13:38

I love music and am always on the look out for something new. It really irritates me when folk say music is rubbish these days and how much better it was in the 80's. It really wasn't!

I really don't like live music as a rule and would rather listen to something properly produced.

This summer I have discovered Yungblud who is fab (and actually would be great live), LF System and Selena Faider.

I really love dance music and listen to the Radio 1 dance station every night on the way home. It always makes me smile to myself that most folk wouldn't expect a nondescript, slightly portly 51 year old to be listening to banging dance 😁

FunnysInLaJardin · 05/09/2022 13:40

To answer your question though OP, I think a lot of life is a music void. I don't really know anyone except DH and the DC who really like music.

BanditBluey · 05/09/2022 13:45

The thing with music is, there's so much that if you start talking to someone about a band and they've never heard of them...that's it,. conversation dead. Or if I name my favourite band most people roll their eyes or have negative comments or say it's for kids (I usually am quick to correct them. When they first came out I WAS a kid! All their original fans have grown up but still enjoy them and their music)
Anyway it makes me not want to discuss music because I just know full well people will say bad things about my favourite band when they don't even know them, it's rude and I don't say negative things about someone else's favourite band even if I don't like them but I respect that they enjoy it and I'm happy for tnem

BanditBluey · 05/09/2022 13:49

My favourite band btw is McFly. I also went to see Bowling For Soup earlier this year, they are my second favourite!
